Microsoft, which has been under a lot of fire for the high failure rate of its Xbox 360 consoles may by August of this year be facing an end to this problem. This is simply because the 90nm GPU, which is the troublesome part in the current Xboxes, will be phased out in favor of the 65nm GPUs. This new GPU will be called Jasper and has been subcontracted to TSMC and Nanya PCB corp. This move comes reportedly on the basis that Microsoft has already exhausted its current supply of 90nm GPUs, paving the way for the company to reduce its costs and improve performance, by using smaller chips based on the 65nm process. This is however not the final move in the GPU/CPU integration program. A year after the release of the ‘Jasper’ GPUs, Microsoft will move to integrate the GPU/CPU into a single package and this marks the future of the Xbox 360 hardware architecture.
