In the age of full HD, the size of the display plays an as big a role as the quality of the content does. The time of 19-inch monitors being large has now become passe and now one would consider any monitor with a size of 24-inch as average. Over the past few weeks, we have reviewed a range of monitors measuring in and around 24-inch and one of the best of the lot was the Dell UltraSharp U2412M. The monitor delivered in terms of performance as well as style.

Today, we take a look at the Dell UltraSharp U2711. As the name suggests, it is a 27-inch monitor and though it may be felt that the main USP of this monitor is the size of the display, it is not entirely true as the monitor comes loaded with various other interesting features as well. Read on to find out more about this 27-inch offering from Dell.

Design and Build Quality
When it comes to the Dell line-up of monitors, the brand is known to offer displays with hard lines, in the process giving it an overall professional appeal. The case is no different with the UltraSharp U2711 and this monitor will definitely please business users who're looking for a display solution. The colours Dell has used on this monitor give it a business-like aura and they have finished it in matte black and silver. The combination of these two colours give it that professional, yet stylish look.

Being a 27-inch monitor, one would expect this to be huge, but Dell have done well in keeping the bezel slim. However, while they have done well in maintaining the frontal appearance of the display, it is very thick from the sides, in comparison to other monitors. However, we are not going to cut any points for this, as the brand have loaded it with a range of connections that would certainly please practically anyone. Connectivity options on the monitor are located at the back and they range from an HDMI port to a DisplayPort and everything in between. The fact that Dell have added a DisplayPort on the monitor, puts them up in a niche bracket, as very few monitors available in the market have this connectivity option. Other ports found here, include two DVI, a VGA, a component video, a composite video, one USB 2.0 upstream, four USB 2.0 downstream and an 8-in-1 memory card reader.

Controls for the monitor are located at the front on the right bezel at the bottom. These controls are touch sensitive and are built well. The buttons for the different menu options light up, which help in adding convenience, while navigating through the interface.

The stand offers varied functions like tilt, swivel and height adjustment. With this model, Dell has not compromised on the usability and have added a vast number of design features. The build quality of the cabinet and stand is excellent and so is that of the base. Rounding up this section of the review, Dell have given one their money’s worth when it comes to the design and build quality.

Features
When it comes to the features of 27-inch monitors, it is usually the size that runs away with the top spot. However, the U2711 is a 27-inch monitor that boasts a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, which is WQHD (Wide quad high definition). This pixel resolution is four times the amount of 720p, a standard that has become common, nowadays. Having a WQHD resolution, one can expect images onscreen to be crisper than Full HD 1080p. This is by far the best feature of the U2711.

Apart from this, the 27-inch monitor supports an aspect ratio of 16:9 and features a crisp response time of 6ms. Owing to a quick response time, this monitor can be ideal for watching movies or gaming. While most brands fit TN panels for their monitors, Dell has opted for an IPS panel here. With this sort of panel, one can expect better viewing angles, however, the response time is compromised slightly. TN panels generally offer a response time of around 2ms. But this should not make much of a difference when used in the real world, as the margin is extremely narrow.

The onscreen display of the monitor is something that we really liked. The interface is extremely well laid out and the content is well detailed. The text for the different menu options are legible and overall very pleasing to look at. Another thing we liked about it was that it was very intuitive and there was no lag noticed onscreen. There are various preset modes as well, which help in easily viewing content without the need for heavy calibration. The brand have added modes, such as standard, multimedia, game, warm, cool and a host of other presets, which can be easily chosen from the menu itself.

Another highlighted feature of this monitor is its PremierColor technology. With this, one can expect accurate colours straight out of the box without the need to calibrate the monitor in depth. This is a feature, we noticed upon switching it on and it offered colours that were near perfect.
