Features
Features on televisions so far included the ability to read media off external storage drives using USB. Things have evolved considerably since then. The Samsung UA55ES8000 is feature-rich, and there's no single feature to highlight. Gesture and voice controls are some of the unique features of this TV.

With voice commands, you can power the television on or off as well as adjust basic settings such as volume, mute and the ability to access different options using more commands. The motion control features of this television is controlled using your hand and with simple hand gestures you can control the television. While you use your hand, a cursor appears on screen allowing you to select different options, the same way like you would do on a computer. With this feature, the television becomes an all-in-one integrated television combining features like voice, motion and Internet. Voice controls work reasonably well but not flawlessly.

The Samsung UA55ES8000 as the name suggests is a 55-inch LED LCD television that can support a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. It uses EdgeLED backlighting, which helps it in maintaining this thin design. Last year when Samsung launched their flagship television, the ES55D8000, 3D was the major feature. Unlike previous year's products, this particular model's key feature isn't its 3D capability. Apart from being 3D capable, it also includes 2D-to-3D conversion, which is part of most high-end 3D TVs. Ths feature is great for watching existing content that isn't 3D. Native 3D content is still quite hard to find these days.

Accessing all of the features and sources on the TV is really simple. Using the television as a stand alone unit with the remote control is extremely easy and navigating through the different options is a walk in the park. Like most high-end televisions available in the market, Samsung has added an in-depth settings menu on the UA55ES8000 allowing one to adjust all the settings necessary to get the perfect picture quality. Of course, if you're going to be calibrating it, there are a ton of finer controls that can be used. Colour saturation levels can be tweaked, as can be the amount of 3D effect. There are even ready-made test patterns that can be checked to see if the colours and saturations are upto your liking. There are other enhancements that are meant to boost performance when it comes to backlighting and blackness levels.

Being a Smart TV, Samsung has added a range of apps preloaded here, which range from applications for fitness to those dedicated to kids. There are also games here as well which can be really entertaining too. In the Samsung Smart Hub, you have the option to access all these apps as well as the ability to explore 3D content, browse YouTube videos and also browse the web. Essentially, this is the screen you would want to be in before proceeding to any app, movie, video, etc. The source manager and Samsung’s AllShare is also available here and with the latter option, you can view content stored in a drive if it is attached to the TV. The television can read NTFS drives as well as USB flash drives thereby expanding the amount of storage that can be used with it.

There’s a constant effort to reduce and totally eliminate subjectivity. Each product is tested according to set test processes so the same test scenario is used.

Verdict
The ratings awarded to a product are derived from a number of tests and calculations, keeping certain important factors in mind. These factors consist of features, performance, quality and value for money. In case of software and some other categories, build quality might be replaced with ease of use or ease of installation. Products are compared with other products in a similar price range or product category.

Features
The features component of the score is rated based on the kind of features present on a particular product. Features are a big part of what people look for when they’re buying a new product such as a phone or a camera.

Performance
The performance score is derived from the benchmarks and tests run on the product. In case of the subjective scores, an average of the scores given by the group of reviewers is considered.

Build Quality
The build quality of a product is important so that it doesn’t fall apart after some use. The build quality scores from the way the product is designed and the kind of materials used in the product.

Value
Value for money comes from the fact that a cheap product is able to provide most of the performance of a higher priced product. Once again, value for money is judged by comparing pricing and performance of products in a particular price range or category.

There are many other aspects of the product that are looked at such as the bundled software and accessories. All of these scores are aggregated together to form the final score.
