While assembling a desktop PC for home or office, picking a good keyboard and mouse combo is something that will also need research. Wired input devices are cheaper, but tend to cause more wire clutter on your desktop. Wireless keyboards and mice are ideal for a wire-free or clutter-free desktop and also can be used as input devices for HTPC setups. Though wireless input combos are known to be pretty expensive, that is not the case with Logitech’s MK260. You can avail of is combo for as little as Rs 1,495.

The keyboard and mouse work on a common wireless USB dongle and are pre-paired, so there is absolutely no need to go through the procedure of connecting each device. The wireless USB dongle is the size of a regular pen drive, though we expected to see a micro USB dongle in the package instead of this one. Simply plug in the USB dongle and the PC will automatically load up the necessary drivers. Once the drivers are installed, you can go ahead and use the keyboard and mouse instantly. The operating distance is around 10 meters. Initially, we did have an issue pairing the keyboard, but after disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it, the connection resumed automatically. There are absolutely no switches for connecting or powering on/off the keyboard or mouse when not in use.

The built-in power saving feature will act and cut off the power when no activity is detected for a prolonged period of time. Logitech claims that the maximum battery life is almost 24 months for the keyboard and around five months for the mouse, depending on the usage. This assures additional savings on consumables. The keyboard uses two AAA-sized batteries and the mouse uses a single AA-sized one, which are included in the package.

The keyboard is pretty compact, with a matte-finished body and keys, but the build quality is not satisfactory. Though the shell is pretty rugged, it is made from soft plastic. Multimedia keys are neatly placed in a single line in the top area, allowing one-touch access to audio controls, Internet, email, calculator and PC shutdown. The stands on the bottom open up to create an 8 degree angle for good typing comfort. The keys are well spaced and large enough for comfortable and ergonomic typing. Though the keys are tactile, they are slightly harder than a conventional keyboard’s keys. The keyboard is designed to be spill-proof, with exit holes provided at the bottom for any liquid that accidentally spills over the keys to drain out. Though the keyboard is very light, the bottom features a set of rubber stubs for good grip over the table surface when typing. Overall, the keyboard is pretty decent for a new user, while older users might need a little getting used to the clicking sound and hardness of the keys.

The mouse featured in the kit is a simple three-button optical mouse. It is just a tad smaller than the size of a conventional mouse and fits snugly in the palm of your hand, and the buttons are tactile and very precise. The scroll button is also very smooth and comfortably placed for your index finger’s reach. It uses a single AA battery and the weight is just right for comfortable use. The shell is similar to that of the keyboard - matte-finished, but with a dual-tone exterior and a grey border.
