Before the year 2004 not many people had heard of a Swedish development studio called Starbreeze Studios. However in June 2004 they popped up on everyone’s radar with their brutally entertaining first person stealth action title called The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (EFBB). As the name suggests, this game was based around Richard B. Riddick, the protagonist from motion pictures like Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick. Instead of being just another useless movie tie-in, EFBB served as a prequel to both movies and was loved by everyone thanks to Vin Diesel’s stellar voice acting, a brutal hand to hand combat system and killer stealth mechanics. __STARTQUOTE__If for some reason you don’t have the patience to play through EFBB all over again you can begin your assault on Dark Athena straight away.__ENDQUOTE__After that Starbreeze started working on The Darkness and Riddick sort of faded away from people’s memories, only to be resurrected nearly five years later in The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena. First things first, this is not a sequel. It’s Starbreeze’s way of letting you experience EFBB all over again in glorious HD while serving up some new single player content and a spanking new multiplayer mode. Strap up children; it’s one hell of a ride. Now in case you missed Escape from Butcher Bay the first time round, here’s a quick rundown on why the game was ‘da bomb’ back in the day. EFBB starts off with Riddick being transported to Butcher Bay by his nemesis Johns, for a certain fee. Riddick isn’t keen on doing the time so for the next eight hours or so you’ll help him plot his escape from that maximum security prison. EFBB is essentially a first person stealth game with a robust hand to hand combat system that eventually gives way to full blown first person shooting towards the end of the game. |
