Iomega ScreenPlay Director Media Player

16 Jan, 2010, 10:00 am IST | by Siddharth Bhatia |

The recent few HD media players we reviewed have been almost rudimentary when compared to the model we have today, for the simple reason that those had no storage capacities inbuilt. Thus one needed an external drive with media files to connect to the players. But Iomega’s ScreenPlay Director media player comes with 1TB storage (2 TB also available), and all the other features required to survive in the new buzzing market of HD media players. Let’s check it out...

 Design
At the heart the product is a storage HDD, and has the form factor of just that, a vertically mounted stout black chassis perched on a black flat stand. The finish is a combination of glossy and matte black. The front panel has a column of grey colored, slim push buttons for operation and the the product comes with a full fledged remote comprising tiny round, well arranged buttons.
The player is powered by the socket on your wall, thus an AC adapter is included, along with an HDMI and USB wire.

Now on to connections. It has one HDMI 1.3 out, a composite, component, an optical audio out, an Ethernet port and 4 USB ports. The Ethernet port means network connectivity, the last option required to make your new age Home theater complete.

The file format support is aplenty, with the complete list displayed in the tabulated form in the pic above. It’s an impressive list to look at, but we have to check the quality of playback.
