Norton Utilities 14

19 Sep, 2009, 9:16 am IST | by Anand Tuliani |

Maintenance tasks like managing startup programs, deleting temporary files, cleaning the registry, and defragmenting the hard drive help keep Windows running smoothly. There are built-in tools for these in Windows but they aren't grouped together so you have to know where each one is located. Norton Utilities presents these and many more in one interface.

The suite starts up in the Optimize section with tools for managing startup items and optimizing the registry. The Registry cleaner and defragmenter scan the registry for invalid and redundant entries and rectify them at the click of a button.

Other tools are startup and service management tools which are not very different from System Configuration Utility in Windows. The Monitor section has tools for monitoring the system, Registry and processes. It offers one-click system optimization which makes changes to the Registry to improve boot time and system performance. You can also assess the performance of your system. The process viewer displays process ID, memory usage and path, and allows killing tasks and setting CPU priority/affinity.

The Windows Tools section has shortcuts to built-in tools in Windows which is a good thing to have for beginners.

Norton Utilities will appeal more to those who are new to Windows. Advanced users will find a lot lacking. We expected more from Norton Utilities, but it didn't impress us much. We liked Norton System Works because it had more features.

Also, the Premier Edition of System Works which included AntiVirus and Ghost was a good all-round suite. Since has Symantec discontinued System Works, you now have to combine individual products as per your preferences.

We haven't received the Indian price of Norton Utilities 14 yet, but the international price is $49.99 USD (Rs. 2,400 approx).

System Requirements:

  • OS: Windows XP/Vista
  • RAM: 256 MB
  • Disk space: 90 MB
