I think it’s time to officially bid the World War II genre goodbye. Over the past few years World War II games have reduced to a mere trickle failing to make a significant impact on the gaming masses. This year we had quite a few WWII games like Velvet Assassin, Wolfenstein, and Death to Spies all of which sank without a trace. And now you have The Saboteur, the final game by developer Pandemic before they were shut down by EA. Honestly speaking The Saboteur is not a bad game. Had Pandemic spent more time polishing up the game we could have had a really enjoyable action/stealth game on our hands. Unfortunately that didn’t happen and what we have is a game that brings a lot of ideas to the table but fails to execute them properly. The Saboteur puts players in the boots of a hot headed, womanizing Irish driver (someone call the Cliché police please) called Sean Devlin who’s living the good life in Paris during the 2nd World War. His insanely inflated ego and brash lifestyle get him into quite a bit of trouble with the local forces and during one such run in his best friend gets brutally murdered by the Germans. Thereafter he embarks on a personal quest to kill each and every Kraut occupying France. While doing so he must also liberate all of France that’s lying helpless under the oppressed thumb of the Germans. This oppression is denoted in the game by a black and white color palette reminiscent of Sin City. And just like in Sin City certain colors like the color of blood or the color of a flag will stand out in bright red giving the game a very unique art style. Liberating a certain area will immediately restore color to it and boost the morale of its citizens. It’s a nice idea marred by tacky execution. For starters I never felt any connection with the lead character primarily because he seemed like such an ahole. He went ahead and played with fire and then cried like a bitch when he got burnt. Yeah cry me a river. Also I never really felt sympathetic towards any of the supporting characters so I really didn’t give a rat’s ass about their cause. Naturally I stopped caring for the plot and turned all my attention on gameplay that if enjoyable would have redeemed the game for me. |
