If you’re into any kind of electronic music, be it lounge, trance, dubstep or progressive, Digitally Imported (DI) is the one app to rule all these genres of music. DI started off as a multi-channel Internet radio show catering to the niche EDM (Electronic Dance Music) genre. Music can be streamed 24/7 in different formats. And now it's available as an app for smartphones as well.

Interface and features
The app has a very simple and straightforward UI. Once loaded, you’re presented with a long list of channels that cater to various sub-genres of EDM. There’s a massive list to choose from and to make it easier for you, you can sort it according to styles or simply by the channels you’ve marked as favourites. The next tab shows you a list of shows that are currently playing. The type of music played once again depends on the show you are listening to. Next up, the community  tab brings you feeds from Facebook and Twitter. These feeds also include posts from DI radio as well as fans and followers. The premium tab unlocks more features, like no commercials in between songs and higher quality audio streams. The paid version also lets you access these online shows via your desktop media players such as Winamp, iTunes, Windows Media Player, Flash and VLC. The paid version will cost you $4.99 per month.

The app also lets you manage your bandwidth settings depending on whether you’re using it on Wi-Fi or 3G. If you’re going to be streaming while on the move, then it’s best if you use a lower bit-rate so that you don’t deplete your data. On Wi-Fi, you can afford to up the quality a bit. The free version lets you stream up to 96kbps MP3 or 64kbps HE-AAC. If you’ve already subscribed for the premium version, then you can push the audio quality to 256kbps on both 3G and Wi-Fi.

Streaming works well on the move and with 64kbps, you can easily stream over 2G as well with very little to no buffering. Audio quality is not terrible either, which is good. Once a show is playing, you can share that stream to Facebook or Twitter. Sleep Timer lets you set a time after which the music will stop on its own, in case you have a habit of listening to music at night. The app also monitors your data usage for both 3G and Wi-Fi, which is a nice way to keep track of your usage.

Verdict
Digitally Imported is available on three big platforms – iOS, Android and BlackBerry. We’re hoping it expands to other growing platforms as well, such as Windows Phone 8 and even Windows 8. SImply put, DI has got to be the best online radio streaming service for EDM since sliced bread. While the free app offers plenty of radio shows in itself, subscribing to it will get rid of the commercials and let you stream higher quality audio as well. The variety of shows that are available are nothing short of amazing. And if EDM is your thing, then this app is a god send.

How We Test

The Tech2 Labs receives many products every single week and each of them is tested with the utmost care and highest level of objectivity. There’s a constant effort to reduce and totally eliminate subjectivity. Each product is tested according to set test processes so the same test scenario is used.

Verdict
The ratings awarded to a product are derived from a number of tests and calculations, keeping certain important factors in mind. These factors consist of features, performance, quality and value for money. In case of software and some other categories, build quality might be replaced with ease of use or ease of installation. Products are compared with other products in a similar price range or product category.

Features
The features component of the score is rated based on the kind of features present on a particular product. Features are a big part of what people look for when they’re buying a new product such as a phone or a camera.

Performance
The performance score is derived from the benchmarks and tests run on the product. In case of the subjective scores, an average of the scores given by the group of reviewers is considered.

Build Quality
The build quality of a product is important so that it doesn’t fall apart after some use. The build quality scores from the way the product is designed and the kind of materials used in the product.

Value
Value for money comes from the fact that a cheap product is able to provide most of the performance of a higher priced product. Once again, value for money is judged by comparing pricing and performance of products in a particular price range or category.

There are many other aspects of the product that are looked at such as the bundled software and accessories. All of these scores are aggregated together to form the final score.

What do the ratings mean?

Ratings are simple - higher the score, the better the product. A brief listing of the features and what they mean are given below.
