Android-based smartphones and tablets are the most popular portable computing devices being bought around. With a huge database of apps available from Google’s Play Store and third-party developers, there is always a threat of it being attacked by viruses, Trojans and Malware due to fake and suspicious apps. Protecting your Android handheld is as crucial as protecting your PC because you have important data such as emails, contacts, messages and other information stored onboard. With banking and quick pay transactions being done openly using a mobile phone and tablet, securing the device is a must. eScan, from MicroWorld Software Services Pvt Ltd, is an antivirus developed for Android-based mobiles and tablets that not only protects your device from virus, Trojan and Malware threats, but also includes security features such as password protection and parental controls. Here are some key benefits of the product. ![]() eScan AV for Android mobiles and tablets
Real-time scanning: As with all antivirus utilities, this one too protects your device by scanning every file and app you download.
Parental control and web protection: Tweaking the settings to enable this feature blocks phishing and virus and malware injecting websites via real-time scanning on the default browser. Additionally, you can also block or restrict access to other installed browsers.
Application control: This feature enables password protection for the applications you select to avoid unauthorised access by others. Additionally, by default, any new application installed will be blocked and can be opened only with the password.
Scheduled scanning: As usual with all antivirus utilities, this one too features scheduled background scanning to scan and clean all your files and applications on both the internal and external storage. ![]() Feature-rich security suite for Android devices.
Call and SMS filter: With this feature, you can filter and black list SMS and calls. You can choose to blacklist or block calls and SMS from unknown numbers. If you have the number saved on your contact list (which means it is a known person), the utility will ignore it, but if the number is not listed, after every call or SMS received, eScan will give you options for filtering it.
Backup and restore: This feature helps you back up and restore your entire contact list or SMS on your phone to your SD card. Sadly, it does not feature any option for online backup. ![]() Backup and parental controls included.
The user interface is very easy for even the first time user and setting up the antivirus is a cakewalk. You need to enter a master password initially, which will be asked whenever you start the application or any other application that is protected. The antivirus runs in the background and you can see the protection enabled with an icon visible in the notification bar. In case of any threat, or if the virus database is outdated, the icon alerts you by changing its colour. The utility takes up around 23MB of RAM and is pretty light on the operating system. Lastly, the options or settings menu of the utility can be tweaked to enable or disable notifications, sounds and logs.
eScan Antivirus for Android is available separately for mobiles and tablets. Both versions are available for Rs 499 each and the package is available for a single user for one year. A three year license will cost you Rs 699 while a lifetime license will cost you Rs 899 for both versions individually. You can download a trial version to test out the application before opting for a license. Both versions can be used on either devices, but the tablet version has two limitations. Options for SMS and contact backup and restore, and call blocking and black listing is not available on the tablet version. However, if you are using a tablet which uses a SIM card and has option for making voice calls, you can use the mobile version on the tablet.
Presently, eScan is not available via the Google Play Store and is soon expected to be featured there. Till then, you will have to download the APK file from the developers website, rename it to .apk (as it downloads as a .rar file) and save it on your SD card. You can then install it using any file manager on your Android device.
