Truecaller

Ever wanted to know who’s been pestering you with crank calls at 4AM? Truecaller is a must-have app for such occasions. It lets you identify practically anyone calling you from a mobile phone, anywhere in the world. Not only that, you can even blacklist certain numbers and find out where the person is calling you from. Impressed? Let’s take a look at the features in greater depth.

Design and Interface

Available on all the popular platforms, Truecaller is a free app that’s available for download from your respective app stores. The UI is very simple and straightforward to use. After launching it the first time, you’ll be prompted to confirm the region you’re in. After that, the app runs in the background and kicks in every time you get a call. You can access advanced features by opening the app directly as well. The first screen lets you search for a number in your country. Simply type the number and within seconds, you’ll be able to get the name of the account holder and what network he or she is using (Vodafone, Idea, etc). Swiping to the right gives you your history of received calls that Truecaller has registered. The ‘Update’ tab on the left lets you update all the numbers in your phonebook with missing information like addresses, etc. It scans the numbers and then updates it with the information it has in its database.

Trucaller also has a social angle to it. You can sign in via Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter and get the latest updates from friends when they call you. The ‘Call Filter’ tab lets you add numbers you wish to block. You can add numbers to the ‘My Blacklist’ page and these numbers automatically get updated in the central database so next time you get a call from a telemarketer, Truecaller will warn you that it’s most likely a spam call, which is really neat. You can also view a list of ‘Top Spammers’ in your region and have Truecaller automatically block all of them.

The settings tab lets you customise how TrueCaller functions. You can choose to enable CallerID on calls as well as SMSs as well as choose the location of where the information will be displayed and the theme as well.Truecaller also includes a very handy little widget that gives you the contact details on the last three or six calls, depending on the type of widget you choose.

Performance

The app works seamlessly every single time. While it doesn’t always recognize landline numbers, it gets almost every mobile number right, every single time. When you get an incoming call, Truecaller begins searching its database for contact info and then displays the name and region of where the person is calling from. This takes just about few seconds and works fine on EDGE as well as 3G. After you’re done with the call, you have the option to save the number to your phonebook. A very interesting feature, albeit a bit creepy, is the ability to see where your caller is currently calling from. Enabling this opens up Google Maps and Truecaller tries to locate the current position of your caller.

Verdict

Available for free on Symbian, iOS, Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry, Truecaller is definitely a must-have app for any smartphone user. It’s incredibly powerful, runs silently in the background and does not eat much battery as well.

The Tech2 Labs receives many products every single week and each of them is tested with the utmost care and highest level of objectivity. There’s a constant effort to reduce and totally eliminate subjectivity. Each product is tested according to set test processes so the same test scenario is used.

Verdict
The ratings awarded to a product are derived from a number of tests and calculations, keeping certain important factors in mind. These factors consist of features, performance, quality and value for money. In case of software and some other categories, build quality might be replaced with ease of use or ease of installation. Products are compared with other products in a similar price range or product category.

Features
The features component of the score is rated based on the kind of features present on a particular product. Features are a big part of what people look for when they’re buying a new product such as a phone or a camera.

Performance
The performance score is derived from the benchmarks and tests run on the product. In case of the subjective scores, an average of the scores given by the group of reviewers is considered.

Build Quality
The build quality of a product is important so that it doesn’t fall apart after some use. The build quality scores from the way the product is designed and the kind of materials used in the product.

Value
Value for money comes from the fact that a cheap product is able to provide most of the performance of a higher priced product. Once again, value for money is judged by comparing pricing and performance of products in a particular price range or category.

There are many other aspects of the product that are looked at such as the bundled software and accessories. All of these scores are aggregated together to form the final score.
