Apart from a few outstanding titles, the racing genre has pretty much fallen deep into the ditch of mediocrity. Most developers try to cater to both the casual and the hardcore racing fan, and in the bargain they end up failing miserably in both areas. Besides these in-between racing titles, there are those that cater to just one sector and do it amazingly well, such as Burnout Revenge (casual) or Gran Turismo (hardcore). Is it really possible for a racing game to be flexible enough to cater to both sides of the spectrum and do it well enough to put most of the other racing titles to shame? Yes it is, and I call this phenomenon Forza Motorsport 2. The original Forza Motorsport garnered substantial critical acclaim and won perfect scores in all departments. Now although I haven’t played the original, Forza Motorsport 2 takes cue from original and sticks to its formula of success - depth + great racing mechanics + an insane amount of customization = successful racing game. Where does the casual gamer fit into the equation? For those of you who aren’t really interested in tweaking your car to the max, you can just play the game in Easy difficulty, or choose to play the arcade mode. Here’s a word of warning though – those of you who like the arcadish feel in your racers will be disappointed here. Although the game does have casual appeal and an arcade mode, it’s not arcadish at all and tries to stay as real in possible; Casual and Arcadish aren’t the same thing after all. |
