PlayStation 3

Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of the PS3 is its launch lineup. As of now, there aren’t any titles that warranty a purchase (would you spend Rs. 3,800 for NFL 2007? Didn’t think so), let alone convince you to buy the console. I don’t see this is a long term problem as even the Xbox 360, which boasts of killer titles like Gears of War, didn’t have a stellar lineup accompanying its launch. Unfortunately we couldn’t get our hands on Resistance: Fall of Man (one of the better launch titles), but we did get, NFS Carbon, Tiger Woods 2007 and Call of Duty 3.

Carbon looks a lot like its Xbox 360 counterpart; only a lot sharper, but CoD 3 on the other hand was pretty impressive (expect the full review soon) as not only did the game look good, but thanks to the PS3’s hardware, there wasn’t a dip in framerate even during the most intensive firefights this series is famous for. The PS3 is a powerful console no doubt, but since we haven’t got our hands on an exclusive (Resistance: Fall of Man), the games we saw, looked pretty similar to what we’ve seen on the 360 till now.

We’ve already taken a look at the PS3’s launch lineup in the past, but here’s a slight recap for all for all you lazy SoBs:

  • Resistance: Fall of Man
  • Genji: Days of the Blade
  • Call of Duty 3
  • Fight Night Round 3
  • NFL 07
  • Marvel Ultimate Alliance
  • Mobile Suit Gundam
  • NBA 07
  • Need for Speed Carbon
  • NHL 07
  • Ridge Racer 7
  • Tony Hawk's Project 8
  • Untold Legends
  • Tiger Woods 07

Even though their launch line up pretty much sucked, Sony managed to redeem themselves to a certain extent by making the PS3 a lot more backward compatible (which means you can play most of your older PSone and PS2 titles on it) than the Xbox 360. While there may not be any graphical improvements of any sort, it’s still good to know, you won’t have to throw away that treasured/beloved copy of Shadow of the Colossus yet.
