It’s a known fact that games based on superheroes more often than not end up sucking really bad. But then again, there are few exceptions to that rule like Vivendi’s Hulk: Ultimate Destruction or Treyarch’s Spiderman 2. While the Hulk offered players mayhem and destruction beyond their wildest dreams (loved weaponizing cars) Spiderman 2 went the GTA way allowing players a tremendous amount of freedom as they traversed the length and breadth of New York cleaning up crime and rescuing balloons for little girls. When Spiderman 3 was announced everyone nearly wet their pants thinking of the possibilities that the next gen version could offer; unfortunately Spiderman 3 feels nothing but a minor upgrade over Spiderman 2 and even then it suffers from certain problems that never plagued the PS2 version. Even though I am pretty disappointed with the game I believe in giving the devil his due and in that matter Treyarch has nailed the swinging in this game right down to the tee and maneuvering Spiderman through New York is a total treat to the senses but once you hit the streets, it’s a different ball game altogether. For starters, the game doesn’t look all that good; in fact it’s pretty disappointing as compared to next gen free roaming games and the frame rates keep dipping especially when there’s a ton of stuff happening on screen. Sure Spiderman himself looks gorgeously detailed and New York City boasts of a pretty wicked draw distance but it has the "look but don’t touch" funda going on for it which means that the game offers zero interactivity with the environment; all you can do is destroy a couple of news paper booths and well, that’s about it. |
