Fujifilm FinePix Z30

30 Jul, 2009, 8:30 am IST | Nikhil Singh | Point and Shoot Point and Shoot

The Z30 has a 10 megapixel CCD sensor that offers 3x optical and 5.7x digital zoom. The camera's color reproduction was vivid, making it great for the lively shots, and its auto-white balance was spot-on too. Image quality on the other hand wasn't great, but at par with other cameras in its range. Even low ISO shots had grainy artifacts, and details weren't too well preserved.

The camera's interface allows even a novice to navigate it with ease, and switch between the handful of modes it offers. It features a basic manual mode, which gives you almost no control over most features. The scene modes on the other hand, are plenty, and camera's Scene Recognition mode works like a charm and almost always picked the right mode for the right shot automatically.

The camera's face/smile detect worked pretty well. It also features a new 'group select' auto-timer, which acts a timer and detects people in close proximity before it clicks a snap - perfect for those of you who love taking pictures with other and plastering them all over social networking sites.

The Z30's ISO sensitivity starts off at 64 and goes up to 1600, but shots beyond ISO 100 start showing loads of artifacts.

Needless to say, this reflects in the camera's night mode, which isn't the best out there since most low light shots taken were loaded with grain, making them only usable in small sizes for web.

Priced at Rs. 11,499 (street price - Rs. 8,499), the Fujifilm FinePix Z30 makes a decent buy for the style-conscious, social-butterfly, novice photographer that wishes for nothing more than to point and shoot some decent shots; but there are better options in the market. The bad paint job put us off pretty bad, so if you do plan on buying this camera ensure that you handle it with extra care.
