Genius 1200 2.1 Wood Speaker System

13 Nov, 2008, 10:38 am IST | by Laiq Qureshi | Docks Docks

As a company, Genius is yet to make an indelible mark in the speaker system market; it seems to concentrate more on testing the waters with products rather than looking after marketing. A case in point: after the launch of its 1250 2.1 channel speaker system, Genius has been quick to release yet another in the same lineup – the SW-HF 2.1 1200. Let's see how the new system fares.

The 1200 comes minimally designed with an elegant color scheme. Genius has used wood for effective sound dispersion, and in-design quality stays intact with the sturdy form factor. The two satellites come with 3-inch drivers, while the subwoofer features an MDF (medium density fiberboard) cabinet with a 5.25-inch long-throw driver.

The volume as well as the bass and treble knobs can be found on the right side of the subwoofer. For practical reasons I like to have the volume knobs on the satellites, but I’m not complaining. The satellites connect to the sub in true RCA style, while the main input is EP.

The satellites and the subwoofer together deliver a total output of 30W RMS, which effectively means 12W for the subwoofer and 9W per channel for the satellites. The color scheme should work fine with a black or gray screen. Apart from the brushed black finish, there’s a strong presence of silver.

The performance is pretty good, what with a clear sound definition supplemented by a pronounced bass. Although Genius claims the MDF cabinet aids in providing deep bass, I didn’t find the bass boomy at all. But that's exactly how I like it!

The lows flow well with the rest of the sound while the mids are pretty accentuated. The presence of the treble knob is helpful. This kind of sound allows for good movie viewing as well.

For Rs 2575 you get well-defined sound, and no stress when it comes to porting. The size and weight are not an encumbrance, and all these factors make this speaker system worth considering.
