Logitech iPod Dock - Express Plus

Docks

Logitech will probably be the first name that pops into your head when you think about iPod Docks. That’s because they seem to constantly be churning out newer models every now and again, recession be damned. The latest is their more simplistic speaker/alarm clock iPod dock called the Pure-Fi Express Plus, designed to be a large yet very portable set of ‘picnic’ speakers slash watch with an alarm.

Form Factor
Except for the recently reviewed Pure-Fi Mobile, Logitech’s docks are designed specifically for the various models of Apple iPods. They’ve got that system down pat. The company has included all the relevant dock converters to suit all iPods, from the first generation models to the latest on the shelves and the iPhones as well. It’s a wee bit on the heavy side and I presumed that would be a cause of concern when it came to carrying it around. Truth be told it wasn’t too bad. However, Logitech claims that the space at the rear is designed for carrying purposes, but it’s not too comfortable holding the device like that as there’s no real grip.

The dock has a large dial in front for controlling the volume obviously as well as for setting the alarm. It also works as a selector. Think of it as a rather large ominous button that rotates. Just underneath that, is a large display with orange digits. On either side of the display are large buttons for activating the Shuffle and Repeat mode on the player. Under the display are keys for setting and controlling the alarm.

The Express Plus also has a small full function remote for controlling the dock’s volume and the alarm as well as limited control for the player. The remote can neatly be tucked away in the rear of the device. At the bottom is a battery compartment that can house six AA batteries. A 3.5mm Auxiliary In for connecting devices other than an iPod is located at the back right beside the DC connector socket.
Like any other Logitech Dock the Express Plus' all black color scheme with the orange high lights around the dial and the display LEDs along with the glossy finish for the front gives it a cool sophisticated look. In style, it doesn’t lack much. But since it doesn’t come with a case, the glossy finish is not going to last for too long, with regular wear and tear.

Features and Performance
As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, the Pure-Fi Express Plus is one of the simpler devices in the Pure-Fi range of iPod Docks from Logitech. It’s devoid of features other than the alarm function. All it’s built to be is a glorified alarm clock that doubles as a speaker set for an iPod or any other device. Nevertheless the alarm was painfully loud enough to wake me up.
