Prototype

To provide a certain amount of respite from all the mayhem on-screen there are times when the game will allow you to try out a stealthy option as well. No, this doesn’t involve sneaking around a la Sam Fisher during the night; instead you’ll be consuming people in a pretty violent way thus absorbing their physical form in the process. Consuming certain key personnel roaming around the city also grants Alex a quick peek into their memories thus shedding some light on his past as well as the origins of the virus.__STARTQUOTE__Prototype triumphs above most of the action games I’ve played in the recent past with its sheer brutality and over the top gameplay.__ENDQUOTE__Prototype has no multiplayer but its single player campaign spans well over eight hours. Over and above that you also have tons of side quests that’ll take you hours to complete. These side quests are timed variations of the story missions but unlike other free roaming games, they’re actually fun since most of them involve killing hundreds of enemies using unlimited resources while some are pretty similar to Crackdown’s rooftop races. Sometimes you’ll be helping the infected repel a military attack while sometimes you’ll don on a uniform yourself and gun down the infected in a particular area using a tank, a grenade launcher (with unlimited ammo) or your badass powers.

Like I mentioned in my introduction Prototype can be a bit repetitive and is a bit on the tougher side. New York isn’t half as detailed as Liberty City and besides the city’s well known monuments, pretty much every building looks the same. Alex and his powers look tight but other than that enemy as well as pedestrian models get insanely repetitive. Environmental destruction is limited to breaking down a few vehicles, trees, water tanks or satellite dishes (go figure). Plus the story is pretty clichd and revolves around "generic government conspiracy theories" you’ve seen and heard of a thousand times by now.

At the same time Prototype is also one insanely liberating experience that grants you a ginormous amount of power you’ve probably never experienced in a game till date. And best of all it encourages you to run wild with them not penalizing you for indulging the sadistic asshole within. In that respect Prototype triumphs above most of the action games I’ve played in the recent past with its sheer brutality and over the top gameplay. In fact I really can’t think of a better stress buster of a game in recent times. So in case you do want me to spell it out for you, B-U-Y T-H-I-S G-A-M-E N-O-W-!

Prototype is available for the Xbox360, PS3 and PC.
