Prototype

Prototype is awesome. Yes it can get ridiculously tough and a bit repetitive along the way but it’s one of the most cathartic gaming experiences I’ve had in recent times. I mean which game out there lets you surf on human bodies or elbow slam a tank to oblivion or even better lift up a tank and throw it into a chopper. Yeah, think about that!__STARTQUOTE__Prototype can get ridiculously tough and a bit repetitive along the way but it’s one of the most cathartic gaming experiences I’ve had in recent times.__ENDQUOTE__If for some weird reason the paragraph above hasn’t convinced you to jump out of your window and pick up the game yet, step this way for the entire review.

In Prototype you’ll step into the boots of Alex Mercer a regular New Yorker who happens to get infected with a deadly virus that grants him killer (pun intended) super powers. Not that he doesn’t appreciate them but it turns out he needs to find out more about his past and in doing so he doesn’t mind killing off a few hundred thousand people. Simultaneously that very same virus somehow gets leaked into the city gradually infecting all its citizens transforming them into mindless, blood thirsty mutants. Of course they all don’t become as bad-ass as you or this would be one insanely tough game.

Prototype’s USP - besides the gratuitous violence - are the shape shifting abilities Alex has access to. Throughout the game you’ll acquire various powers and upgrades that mutate your hands to become variations of claws, whips, swords, hammers etc. The very first mission (that doubles up as a tutorial) grants you all these powers at once giving you a small taste of the mayhem to come. In a matter of minutes these powers get taken away from you but you’ll slowly re-acquire them during the course of the game.

Would you buy it?
