Kingston DT400 16GB

26 Nov, 2008, 3:55 pm IST | Shayne Rana |

Memory stick capacities are increasing all the time, in fact Kingston has recently launched 64GB and 32GB pen drives. At present, however we have the 16GB DataTraveler in house and here’s the review.

Form Factor
Kingston’s swivel design for some of their DataTravelers eliminate the need for pesky USB covers or caps for the port. Those could every easily get damaged or get misplaced since most don’t come with a tether to be clipped or attached to the main drive. Needless to say we’re fans of this design. It’s easily manageable as well as easy to carry around.

However, the company should have at least included a strap loop for the drive itself, like most others that you can hang around your neck. A small LED is also provided to indicate usage.

Performance
In keeping with the normal trends nowadays, Kingston has featured Migo Software's MigoSync, which allows you to carry your email and documents on the go. The software is multi-faceted and allows you to easily sync your Outlook/Thunderbird/Lotus Notes emails along with your bookmarks from Firefox 1-2.0. Woefully, support for Firefox 3.0 was absent ,but we are sure this can be fixed with a software update. The software worked well out of the box syncing with a variety of programs without any issues.

Surprisingly though, the software package that is available with the memory stick, indicates the presence of a security manager. This was absent from our test memory stick. We are following up on this and will test it thoroughly and post an update. Though there's really not much more to add considering other brands also carry their own version of security software to password protect your stored data etc. on the drive with strong software encryption.
