Plantronics Discovery 975 - Simple But Not Ingenious

09 Nov, 2010, 3:41 pm IST | by Ashish Koshy | Headphones Headphones

Plantronics is a known brand in the world of Bluetooth headsets, and has always come up with stuff that’s high on performance. We make a “discovery” of their latest headset, the Discovery 975.

Design
The device is quite sleek and nice to look at and definitely is a lot better than many headsets that make the wearer look like a patient who’s undergone ear-surgery!

 Sleek and sexy

A gunmetal gray color gives it a super metallic look and the base has a black leather finish. The earpiece has a padding of transparent gel, which makes it quite comfortable to wear (at least in the beginning) and at the same time stays firmly attached to your ear.

Comfortable, but not for long

It has a button on the side which functions as the power button and also can be used to answer or cut calls. There’s a button below to increase/decrease the volume and a mini USB port for charging. The charging case has a rich feel with its leather casing. Bundled with the package is a USB wire, a two-pin adapter and a three pin adapter (in case you travel a lot) and additional ear-cases.

Performance
The prime importance for a headset is its clarity. The sound is clear although you would prefer it to be a little louder when the surroundings are noisy. Interestingly the voice clarity (outgoing voice) seems to be as normal as it can be. The battery life is a good 4 hours 30 minutes and takes an hour and a half to charge fully.

A rich leather casing

One of the sad points is that while it’s quite comfortable initially, I ended up having an earache after wearing it on my right ear for as long as 45 minutes. Strangely, it wasn’t the same on the left one.

Verdict
Performance is quite good, but not exceptional. It doesn't deliver what you would expect at a price of Rs. 5,490 MRP. It scores high on design and looks, but leaves you wanting it to deliver more. On the whole, it’s only worth a buy if (and only if) you have the money!

Do let us know if you’ve used any other Bluetooth headsets that you feel are priced right and good on performance.
