Hitachi has had a long mainstay in the internal hard drives genre and they’ve been launching various models, since quite some time now. We had reviewed the Deskstar 7K3000, a 3TB internal hard drive, earlier, and now it’s time for the 7K1000.D to have a test run in our labs. Let’s have a look on how it performs.

Design and Features
Internal hard drives don’t really have much to boast about in terms of design at least, because almost all of them look identical. That said, this Deskstar does look a tad thinner than the normal run-of-the-mill internal hard drives. Also, it’s much lighter than most hard drives out there in the market. From the 1TB of memory, 923GB is user available and the hard drive runs at 7200 rpm. This one’s SATA3 compliant, too just like the earlier 3TB version, the Deskstart 7K3000.

Performance
We put the Deskstar through our customary synthetic and real world tests and here’s our verdict on the performance. Sequential and random write speeds are pretty consistent at around 82 MB/s but it’s the difference in the read speeds that makes it a little inconsistent. The Sequential read speed is quite impressive at 102.4 MB/s, but the Random read speed, as can be seen in the chart, takes a hit with speeds only up to 46.02 MB/s.

Performance Chart

In our synthetic tests, the drive gave a drive index speed of 148.8 MB/s at a random access time of 18.88 ms in SiSoft Sandra. HDTach gave an average read speed of 155 MB/s and a burst speed of 267.5 MB/s. CrystalDiskMark scores were good as well with Random 512KB write getting a speed of 77.23 MB/s, while Random 4K QD32 read speeds clocking in at 1.394 MB/s

Verdict
The Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.d is priced at Rs.5,100 (MOP). It performs fairly well, except for the random read speeds. Hard drive prices are on the rise and it’s quite apparent with the pricing of this internal drive. The main reason that would make one buy this drive is the space it provides, and on a whole, it’s quite an average hard drive.

How We Test

The Tech2 Labs receives many products every single week and each of them is tested with the utmost care and highest level of objectivity. There’s a constant effort to reduce and totally eliminate subjectivity. Each product is tested according to set test processes so the same test scenario is used.

Verdict
The ratings awarded to a product are derived from a number of tests and calculations, keeping certain important factors in mind. These factors consist of features, performance, quality and value for money. In case of software and some other categories, build quality might be replaced with ease of use or ease of installation. Products are compared with other products in a similar price range or product category.

Features
The features component of the score is rated based on the kind of features present on a particular product. Features are a big part of what people look for when they’re buying a new product such as a phone or a camera.

Performance
The performance score is derived from the benchmarks and tests run on the product. In case of the subjective scores, an average of the scores given by the group of reviewers is considered.

Build Quality
The build quality of a product is important so that it doesn’t fall apart after some use. The build quality scores from the way the product is designed and the kind of materials used in the product.

Value
Value for money comes from the fact that a cheap product is able to provide most of the performance of a higher priced product. Once again, value for money is judged by comparing pricing and performance of products in a particular price range or category.

There are many other aspects of the product that are looked at such as the bundled software and accessories. All of these scores are aggregated together to form the final score.
