Samsung UA46B6000VR LED lit LCD TV

03 Jun, 2009, 3:00 pm IST | by Siddharth Bhatia | LCD LCD

Samsung has done the deal this time with their new LED lit LCD TV. The ad for this has started airing too, and quite a nice one at that. Our labs have got a fresh new piece of the UA46B6000VR, and we humbly accept the privilege to be the first in our country to review it. Our hands are just itching to see how this new technology fares.

Design
Let me state one point in the beginning itself, as a summary of the paragraph to follow, this one is a sexy looker. Contoured like a slim piece of modern art, the bezel is just 30 mm. I hate agreeing with marketing slogans, but this one lives up to the claims in the design aspect. It has Touch Of Colour feature by Samsung, which incorporates a mild hint of amber around the bezel outer borders, better visible in yellow light. The Samsung logo is printed bang on center of the bottom panel, that being the only logo anywhere in sight. Just below this logo is a crescent shaped LED that glows bright red when on.

That of course is not the only LED in the unit. On top of the bezel uniformly spread is glass, seamless in its edges and surface. Thus this model does not have the notorious glossy black finish that Sammy usually sports, and I secretly hate. The connections at the back are very neatly packed in, so as to facilitate the slim design. We have a row of 4 HDMIs facing sideways thus accessible from the left side panel. Then we have the other suite of component and composite connectors facing downwards from a single row. There is a USB 2.0 that only plays MP3s and JPEGs. This could have been more, like LG, that supports DivX too. There is a D-sub PC in, but no optical audio out, this too could have been there.

The video engine is brand new, named SAMSUNG LUXIA LED Engine, thus we are expecting newer menus and more features. The screen size we have is 46-inches with a native resolution of 1920 x 1080. One thing that is absurd is there is no rating of brightness mentioned anywhere. The contrast rating is of the dubiously touted ‘dynamic’ nature, thus it is a large number like 3,000,000:1. It’s a whopping number nonetheless. The response time is 4 ms.  The most important factor is that these LED edgelights consume upto 40% less power, thus this TV can last into the Go Green revolution about to take over.
