SanDisk has now released a new card, the Extreme Pro SDHC UHS-I, and claims that it has a faster shot-to-shot performance than previous models. SanDisk also emphasises that this card is designed to be heavy duty.

Design and Features

The SanDisk Extreme Pro SDHC UHS-I card we received has a capacity of 32 GB - other storage capacities available in this line are 8 GB and 16 GB. This SDHC card does not look any different from any other SD cards. It is Black in colour and has a Black and Gold label that boasts of its 45MB/s file transfer rate. The card is made of hard plastic and SanDisk claims that it is shockproof, waterproof and X-ray proof. To the right of the card there is a small Grey slider lock that protects it when not in use. This card can be unlocked by using your finger nail.

The Extreme Pro boasts of having Power Core Controller technology which SanDisk claims provides faster shot-to-shot performance up to 45MB/s. However, this is achievable using a camera which is UHS-I enabled such as the Nikon D7000. The card includes an Error Correction Code engine which helps in overall data integrity and reliability during read and write. Apart from this, SanDisk also claims that the card adheres to the new UHS Speed Class 1 video class rating. By that, it supports 10MB/sec minimum sustained write speed capable of recording HD 1080p videos or even 3D content.

Performance

The SanDisk Extreme Pro SDHC UHS-I card was tested using a Canon EOS 600D DSLR camera for testing the write speeds. Synthetic and real world benchmarking was done on an ASUS G74S notebook. While using the DSLR camera we noticed that continuous shooting was possible to well over 20 pics. After that the shooting began slowing down. This shows the high write speeds of the card during photography.

Reasonably high read speeds

To get an idea of the throughput of this card, we ran our set of synthetic benchmarks that we use on Flash storage devices. We used SiSoft Sandra first and recorded average read speeds of 26.78 MB/s. The Random Access time noted was 1.8ms which is very good for an SDHC card. We also dumped a large 4 GB file on the drive and an assorted folder set of 4 GB of data. We copied it to the SDHC card and then from the card copied it back to the notebook’s hard disk drive. The 4 GB single file copy to the card recorded a score of 14.25MB/s while the 4GB multiple file copy noted a score of 12.06MB/s. The transfer rates from the card to the HDD was a lot quicker with the 4 GB single file copy recording a score of 26.25MB/s and the multiple file transfer recording a score of 23.95MB/s. The speeds noted on this card are pretty impressive.

Verdict

The SanDisk Extreme Pro SDHC UHS-I sells at a maximum retail price Rs. 12,499. While this card is on the pricier side, it does show good performance when used in a camera, as well as a PC.
