All in ones make for great resourceful printers, because they offer pretty good functionality at a relatively low price tag. After their Pixma MG8170 that raised the bar for All in ones, Canon has announced their new Pixma E500 – a low-budget super affordable All in one. But, does it withstand our litmus test? Let’s find out.

Design and Build Quality

The E500 comes in a playful black and blue colour scheme and looks pretty interesting for a home printer. The top of the machine is an absolute fingerprint magnet, and if you look too closely you might even be able to differentiate the people who have used the printer. We’ve got the control panel buttons on top, with the USB and power ports at the back. It’s got a pretty average footprint with a dimension of  449 x 304 x 152mm and a weight of 5.3 kgs. .

In terms of the build, although it may have a lot of flaps, it doesn’t look very sturdy. One wrong placement of your hands and the tray box may break. There are a lot of plastics involved, but you’ll have to be careful not to keep the end of the printer towards the edge of your table, or wherever you’re placing it, because you might just snap it. The design may suit your home interiors, but we’d have loved a little better build quality.

Features

The Canon Pixma E500 has a maximum printing resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi. This printer makes use of their proprietary FINE high yield print cartridges and according to their spec sheet, the E500 has a print speed of approximate 5ipm for colour A4 printouts and approximate 8.6ipm for black and white A4 printouts. The Pixma supports a wide variety of paper types, including the popular A4, A5, B5, LTR, LGL and 4 x 6 formats. The front tray can support up to 100 A4 sheets at a time.

As far as scanning is concerned, the E500 is capable of scanning at an optical resolution of 1200 x 2400 dpi and has an approximate scanning speed of 14 seconds. The copier has a copy speed of approximate 30 seconds. We’ve put all these stats to the test in our performance section.

Setting up the printer is fairly easy. There are clear labels on the insides of the printer that guide you through the cartridge installation procedure. It’s as simple as pull, insert and lock the cartridges inside. The E500 comes with a range of software in its driver CD that allows you to print quickly and without a lot of hassle. It can also create a few effects to your existing images, including the popular Fish-Eye effect, along with Miniature, Toy, Soft Focus and Blur Background effects.

How We Test

The Tech2 Labs receives many products every single week and each of them is tested with the utmost care and highest level of objectivity. There’s a constant effort to reduce and totally eliminate subjectivity. Each product is tested according to set test processes so the same test scenario is used.

Verdict
The ratings awarded to a product are derived from a number of tests and calculations, keeping certain important factors in mind. These factors consist of features, performance, quality and value for money. In case of software and some other categories, build quality might be replaced with ease of use or ease of installation. Products are compared with other products in a similar price range or product category.

Features
The features component of the score is rated based on the kind of features present on a particular product. Features are a big part of what people look for when they’re buying a new product such as a phone or a camera.

Performance
The performance score is derived from the benchmarks and tests run on the product. In case of the subjective scores, an average of the scores given by the group of reviewers is considered.

Build Quality
The build quality of a product is important so that it doesn’t fall apart after some use. The build quality scores from the way the product is designed and the kind of materials used in the product.

Value
Value for money comes from the fact that a cheap product is able to provide most of the performance of a higher priced product. Once again, value for money is judged by comparing pricing and performance of products in a particular price range or category.

There are many other aspects of the product that are looked at such as the bundled software and accessories. All of these scores are aggregated together to form the final score.

What do the ratings mean?

Ratings are simple - higher the score, the better the product. A brief listing of the features and what they mean are given below.

1 - 3

The product is bad in almost every aspect. We strongly advise against purchasing this product.

4 - 6

An average product that isn't the best you can buy, but isn't the worst either.

7 - 8

Product with this rating is highly recommended because it's priced sensibly, has a good set of features and performs well.

9 - 10

Exceptionally excellent product with features and performance unlike any we've seen in the past. A must-have for everyone!
