Gaming mice designs often make people’s jaws drop, but there’s no mouse, which does that job better than the Cyborg R.A.T. 9 gaming mouse. The R.A.T.9 looks like it came out of a Transformers movie and there’s no better way to get people’s attention at a LAN party. It’s not just the looks - it’s practical, highly customizable and it’s got some pretty impressive hardware as well.
Hands on: Cyborg R.A.T. 9
Design and build quality The R.A.T.9 looks very impressive - it’s got a solid metal base at the bottom. There are layers of plastic and metal dials and springs above that build up the shape of the mouse. The R.A.T. 9 has a matte finish across the device, including the thumb rest, buttons and the palm rest towards the back. The R.A.T. 9 appears to be designed to be customizable, so there are panels that can be removed, replaced and adjusted to your liking. Without this done, it feels little awkward with all the gaps in between the mouse at different points. ![]() The R.A.T. 9 means business!
Those who like to place their palms on the entire mouse might find this sort of shape and design a little odd. If you’re a claw-style gamer, then the ergonomics should work fine, even without the adjustments. The mouse is highly customizable as far as the shape and feel is concerned. To do this, there are a few replaceable bits. The back panel lets you slide back to different positions for larger and smaller hands. There are also two extra pads with different textures and heights. The thumbrest panel can also be released and adjusted just like the one on the right panel that supports your little finger. ![]() Bundled case to carry the weights around
Like any other high performance gaming mouse, the R.A.T. 9, too has supports for weights. There’s a large bolt at the back that can be unscrewed, along with a spring that keeps these weights in place. The bolt itself doubles up as a screw that can be used to unlock the other panels of the mouse. ![]() Weight release mechanism
As for the friction, it’s kept in check by the five mouse feet at the bottom. The largest are present towards the back, while the two tiny ones are placed towards the front. We recommend using a somewhat heavy mouse such as this on a cloth pad. |

How We Test
The Tech2 Labs receives many products every single week and each of them is tested with the utmost care and highest level of objectivity. There’s a constant effort to reduce and totally eliminate subjectivity. Each product is tested according to set test processes so the same test scenario is used.
The ratings awarded to a product are derived from a number of tests and calculations, keeping certain important factors in mind. These factors consist of features, performance, quality and value for money. In case of software and some other categories, build quality might be replaced with ease of use or ease of installation. Products are compared with other products in a similar price range or product category.
The features component of the score is rated based on the kind of features present on a particular product. Features are a big part of what people look for when they’re buying a new product such as a phone or a camera.
The performance score is derived from the benchmarks and tests run on the product. In case of the subjective scores, an average of the scores given by the group of reviewers is considered.
The build quality of a product is important so that it doesn’t fall apart after some use. The build quality scores from the way the product is designed and the kind of materials used in the product.
Value for money comes from the fact that a cheap product is able to provide most of the performance of a higher priced product. Once again, value for money is judged by comparing pricing and performance of products in a particular price range or category.
There are many other aspects of the product that are looked at such as the bundled software and accessories. All of these scores are aggregated together to form the final score.
What do the ratings mean?
Ratings are simple - higher the score, the better the product. A brief listing of the features and what they mean are given below.
