Sony Ericsson G900

Features and Performance

The G900 works on something called the UIQ (User Interface Quartz), which is based on the Symbian OS for mainstream smartphones like this. The first one that I happened to use with a backdated edition of the UIQ was the P990. To power this UI the G900 is equipped with the 208 MHz ARM9 CPU and 128MB of RAM, the same as the SE P1i.

This is not impressive at all; it's bad news for power users. It explains the sluggish performance, but it's something I don’t appreciate from phones of this caliber. There is so much the phone can manage, yet the low processing power remains its biggest downside.

With 128MB RAM available, I seriously expected to run more than five applications at the same time, and also access messaging. But it becomes too slow to handle, and also hangs at times. There’s a good reason for my rambling, and that happens to be a good UI. To complement what the phone has to offer, there should have been a faster processing power to drive it.

The phone has ample features, but let’s start with the main screen. There are about 11 panels which can be accessed from the main screen by either moving left or right on the nav-pad. Of course, they are totally customizable, I wouldn’t expect anything less. Be it messaging, notes, music, or photos, it’s your best option to get to things you use faster than locating them in menus and sub-menus.

I have never had any use for notes, though I know a good many of my friends use it. I did, however, enjoy scribbling on the notes app, mostly random sketches. The point is, having a touchscreen option gives you an edge, and if you need to scribble urgent notes on the fly, this is the best you can get.

Would you buy it?
