Bounce, Boing Voyage - N-Gage

28 Mar, 2009, 10:00 am IST | by Shayne Rana | Mobile phones Mobile phones

The original Bounce game was fun even with its rather dreary two dimensional design. The N-Gage version of the popular mobile game is a 3D look at the central character, a bright Red ball, who’s out to get a rather annoying villain in the form of a cube-faced giggler (pardon the phrase) called the Hypnotoid. Yeah... kudos to the guy who came up with that name.

Look and Feel
The layout is bright with plenty of colors and oddball characters to keep you wildly amused. There’re a few weird cut-scenes at the beginning and sometimes in the middle of each level that, I presume are only present as an enticement to complete the game and completely annihilate that annoying ‘Cuboid’ character with the idiotic laugh. He hypnotizes characters (hence his ridiculous name) into creating obstacles sometimes and simply flies off. The essential theme is to keep chasing him down through the land of ‘Pongpingy’ (yes I had a hearty laugh too) to rid it of his painful laugh, well his evil rule anyhow. The roads with its twists and inclines have a decent level of detail in the graphics. The soundtrack is a bit off but does have a certain ‘bouncy’ ring to it to get you in the swing of things.

Gameplay
Gameplay is very simple but again the nav-pad is not very easy to use till you get used to it so it’ll take you a few tries. The camera angles can be altered depending on the direction you’re turning. Some of the levels can get a bit crazy as you speed ball down steep slopes and try to collect coins and power-ups etc. All of this is essentially a chase to get at the idiot Cuboid character that’s always too far away. You can also change the density of the ball from Mud to Rock depending on when you require it. The variety in the worlds makes gameplay quite entertaining, however on the downside, its level of intensity and difficulty of each level is not very consistent. But to ensure that you’re always enticed, the creators have thrown in plenty of little tricks and fun activities.

The Bottom Line
It’s quite a lot of fun as it tends to get quite challenging even after the first couple of stages. You’ll be required to have really good control of your player as you have to remember you’re pretty much rolling around on a hovering mound and one slip is a long fall down. It’s plenty of fun and colorful enough to play over and over again. That villain is what will make you want to continue just so you can shut him up. To download the game you’ll have to shell out about Rs. 277 ($5.49) which is not too much. It’s fun in both landscape and portrait modes.
