There are plenty of multimedia handsets out there for in the lower end segment, in fact we just showed you a few last week. Another one that could have been part of the list is this, the LG KG195. If you’re wondering why it wasn’t, take a look at my opinion on that. Form Factor The KG195 is a simplistic looking candy bar styled handset. It’s squared off edges also tend to make it a bit of a generic design though. The handset does manage to make pretty good first impression. However looks aren’t everything. The display is no problem for the segment it’s in – 1.8-inches with a 128 x 160 pixel resolution. A proprietary all-in-one connector is located on the side above the camera button which is above the microSD card slot. Volume/Zoom keys are located on the other side. A VGA camera is located at the rear of course right beside the external speaker. While the handset is quite slim and the all-black case with blue highlights tends to make it quite stylish, the issue is the keypad itself. Sure it’s got a large keypad and with a for way nav-pad but the plastic it’s sheathed in makes it too hard and the typing a real pain. Of course that is the main attraction when it comes to handsets in general, so needless to say, that feature pretty much drags the entire handset’s ratings down into the mud. The rear panel doesn’t sit ion too well and feels a bit loose. The build quality of the LG KG195 is just not up to par, not by long shot. Features and Performance Interface There’s absolutely nothing new about the interface but there’s something to be said about consistency. While the UI is simply laid out like all others in this lower end category, the problem is that navigation is a not easy, considering the under-zealous keypad. And what makes it worse is that it takes one extra click just to open up a selected folder. While you may be thinking I’m crazy and its jut one click, I would like to remind you about the keypad once again. Media The music capabilities of the KG195 are really quite good. The handsfree kit is comfortable and the sound quality may be leaning towards the higher frequencies a little but is not bad on the whole. It’s loud and clear and the player comes with EQ presets that can be used to make a few minor tweaks to the output tone. The KG195 also comes with a pretty good FM radio. An addition to that features is the FM recorder that has a scheduling option. A few games, six to be precise, are tossed in to help while away a few spare moments you might find. Other media features also include a stand alone voice recorder and video player that supports 3GP and MPEG4 formats although my test files didn’t seem to work. Connectivity This low budget media friendly handset is loaded with WAP and GPRS connectivity. The browser is easy enough to navigate if you can – keypad again. Bluetooth is also on board with A2DP for wireless stereo headset connectivity and USB 2.0 (mini). |
