Samsung YP-S2QB

Samsung’s YP-S2 is one more of those faceless DAPs that are simple in design and functionality and offer the minimalist user easy transport and playback for their audio files. In this case sound quality and price play important roles in determining the rating. So let’s get to it.

Form Factor
I think Samsung has a real winner when it comes to design. While the YP-S2 is easy to use and navigate, it also infuses a touch of class and style to what's essentially a simple-looking player. Aptly dubbed the Pebble, this glossy and smooth DAP has a set of navigation keys located on what I can only describe as its underbelly.

The five-way nav-pad has volume keys, forward/back keys that double as rewind and fast forward, and a Power/Play/Pause key. A sixth button constitutes an on-the-fly EQ preset switcher. The YP-S2 also has a 3.5mm earphone jack located on one side that doubles as a USB port/charger (converter provided).

The earphones come attached to a loop that goes around your neck and are extremely comfortable. The 3.5mm pin also has a clip that attaches to the player so it doesn’t slip off. The device weighs just 13g so it’s light and won’t feel like a millstone around your neck.

Performance
Audio

Equipped with Samsung’s DNSe sound engine, the YP-S2 is capable of delivering some really sweet tones. It’s loud enough to keep unwanted outside sounds at bay, and cranking up the volume won’t be necessary. Users get a pleasant serving of bass. The dynamic range is relatively well-balanced and if you are looking for a few thrills the DNSe EQ presets should satisfy that craving.
