Samsung S3650 Corby Mobile Phone

Connectivity
Since the Corby’s prime demographic is the younger generation of mobile users, Samsung has made sure that the connectivity options provided are best suited for these users without going overboard. It supports EDGE and GPRS for internet connectivity and Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP and USB 2.0. The widgets provided will allow the regular Social Networker to always stay connected with their online friends though Facebook, MySpace, Orkut and even Twitter. Even a YouTube widget is part of the deal. The Communities application will allow these users to very easily upload images to their favorite sites all from one easy location.

Google has also provided their list of services which include Google Maps for navigation, Google Search and a quick link to Google Mail. Support for also creating and downloading IMPA and POP3 email is also available with a simple Wizard setup option. An RSS reader and Samsung’s Fin Music application are on board along with a Sync feature for backing up your data. The browser is simple and well laid out with a landscape viewing option to optimize viewing on the large screen. A downloads section is also at hand for getting extra content from Samsung’s website.

Misc. Features
From an Alarm clock, a loud speakerphone, Photo Contacts, converter, calculator, Stopwatch and even a Dictionary plus more, the Corby is quite loaded. As usual, Samsung has included a lot of games. Unfortunately they’re all Try and Buy demos except for Samsung’s Cricket which seems to be free. A Calendar and Memo widget are also available for the desktop for easy reminders. Samsung’s Mobile Tracker application is also available.

Camera

What’s truly remarkable about this handset is the camera. For a handset at this price the camera settings for an otherwise basic 2 megapixel phone camera are fantastic. The Corby comes with a Smile Detection setting as well as Samsung’s omni-directional auto-stitch Panorama mode. That’s aside from regular features that include a continuous shooting, White Balance, a few effects and a Night Mode. It also records video in a 320 x 240 pixel resolution.

Image quality is quite decent for a 2 MP camera phone. Pictures may not be very quite crisp and the colors may look a little washed out but you can't expect too much.

The panorama shots look quite good too. Although the handset detects faces rather quickly it doesn’t seem to know what a smile would look like too accurately. Still it usually gets the job done easily enough.

Battery
The battery life of the Corby is one more feature that makes the handset a good choice for purchase. On a single charge I used it quite thoroughly for little over two days. My usage included calls and message of course, plus email, web access and a few hours of music and radio. Talk time alone was well over 4 hours and 45 minutes. Brilliant!

The Bottom Line

The Corby comes with a price tag of Rs. 9,600 (MRP) that includes a couple of panels and a 2 GB memory card. The MOP is approximately Rs. 8,100 in certain stores. Sure there are quite a few handsets designed for this segment available at cheaper prices too and the Corby could honestly be considered just another face in the crowd, but right now, till something better comes along, its rich youth oriented feature set and jazzy design make it stand out like Elvis Presley at a Lawyers Conference. There’s really not much more you could ask for the price.
