Samsung SGH-P310

Fashion phones usually go for the slim, glossy or brushed metal look like the RAZR or Samsung’s Ultra Editions. Some go out of the way, like Nokia’s 7280 'stick' phone. The Samsung P310 is one such phone that tries to go a different way. Doing this is almost always a risk, as the product can end up being revolutionary or it might only find place in a trash can. Which one is the Samsung P310?

While not nearly as off course as the 7280, the P310 is still a very distinctive looking phone that doesn’t try to conform to any established standards. The phone is 8.5mm slim and is about the shape of a credit card. It’s really, really small, and as a result, easy to fit in one’s hand, jeans pockets or shirt pocket too. It does look like a small calculator, but the P310 is a full featured mobile phone. Really!

It comes with a leather jacket that gives a more business-like look to the phone. Mostly people have been using similar leather jackets with i-mate and O2 phones, so this just sort of feels a little corporate. The leather jacket takes the thickness of the phone to a full 2cm.

That’s because the leather jacket also houses an extra battery. When the phone is put in the jacket, two battery icons appear on the display and both are used simultaneously, giving the phone additional life.

This is actually a bit different from what it sounds. Most mid- to high-end Samsung phones easily go up to 4 days with moderate usage, so an additional battery that more than doubles the thickness of the phone should easily manage 8 days, right? But the P310 topped out at just around 6 days. I didn’t use the camera or the web browser much during this time; I just made and received calls.

The battery in the phone is less powerful than the one in the jacket. The battery in the phone stores around 550 mAh while the one in the jacket puts 800 mAh. Six or perhaps seven days, if sparingly used, doesn’t sound too bad for 1350 mAh, but it does sound unimpressive for a Samsung phone that’s 2cm thick, when their phones almost a quarter of that can manage 4 days. The point here is that, even though "an extra battery" seems like it’s a brilliant option for those who need phones with long battery life, the P310 doesn’t last /that/ long, given the size of the phone.

The jacket battery cannot be charged separately. When the phone is inserted into the jacket and is charging, both the phone and the jacket battery get charged simultaneously.
