QNAP has been a well-known brand in manufacturing network attached storage drives (NAS) since a while now. It has a number of NAS models ranging from a single bay to 16 bay ones, which can support up to 48 terabytes of data with present available hard drive capacities. QNAP caters to home, SOHO and enterprise customers, and the software used for these products is similar across the range.
Design and Features The QNAP TS-419P II is another versatile four bay NAS drive for storing data such as documents, media and emails, which can be easily and securely shared over a local network or across the globe via an internet. The TS-419P II supports up to four hot swappable, 3 TB 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA drives with a maximum storage limit of up to 12 terabytes of raw data. The four drives can be used independently or combined in Single Disk, JBOD, RAID 0, 1, 5, 5 + Hot Spare, 6, 6 + Hot Spare, 10, 10 + Hot Spare options. The NAS is built using a Marvell 2 GHz processor with 512 MB of DDR3 RAM, a flash memory of 16 MB and runs on a Linux operating system. ![]() The TS-419P II features a 2 GHz processor and 512 MB of DDR3 RAM with a Linux OS.
The rear panel sports two Gigabit Ethernet ports, three USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports and two eSATA ports for storage expansion via external drives. The front panel features a USB 2.0 port, the power switch, status LEDs, a control panel with a simple mono LCD display apart from the four HDD bays. The front USB port is a hot-copy USB link using which one can instantly copy the contents of a pen drive or external USB hard drive to the internal storage by just pressing the Copy button after inserting the USB drive. The entire chassis is very sturdy and built out of metal with a brushed aluminum exterior finish. The drive bays are a combination of metal and plastic, but lack any form of locking, which could be a security threat as anyone can steal the drives by simply pulling away the bays. ![]() The front USB port has an instant copy button for external drives.
We also noticed that the TS-419P II is powered using an external non-standard 12 Volt power brick. Using an external power brick has its own advantages and disadvantages. Though an external power brick tends to increase wire clutter and occupy additional space, the advantage it carries is easy power supply replacement by the user himself and lesser heat accumulation inside the NAS chassis.
Performance The NAS is very simple to install, configure and deploy and is aimed toward home and SOHO users who can take advantage of the huge centralized storage option for data and media files. It can be configured from any browser or via an Android or iOS app from a handheld device. The QNAP TS-419P II features services such as file server, FTP, SAMBA, photo station, music station, download station, web, database, backup, print, surveillance, logs, RADIUS, antivirus, iTunes, UPnP media server, multimedia and a few more. Download station is a built-in app which can be used to download data and media files from torrents, Rapidfire, HTTP and FTP servers without the need of a PC. ![]() The rear panel has an exhaust fan and ports such as eSATA, USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and Gigabit LAN.
Verdict and Price in India QNAP also offers single bay and two bay network attached storage drives for home and small business environments that cost around Rs 14,000 to Rs 17,000 approximately. This four bay NAS retails at an MOP of Rs 49,000. If you are looking for a cheaper four bay NAS, you can opt for the TS-412 at around Rs 31,000 but sacrifice a few features such as a slower 1.2 GHz processor with 256 MB RAM, no USB 3.0 options and a few other ones. QNAP comes with a two-year warranty period. Those looking for a decent and feature-rich storage solution to centrally store around 12 TB of data with additional features of servers, download clients and surveillance capabilities, the QNAP TS-419P II is an ideal option. |
