Once you defeat the boss, you’re transported to Most Wanted territory as the game allows you to choose two markers from him (as opposed to three markers from Most Wanted). These markers can be anything from winning his/her car, to free upgrades to a get out of jail card. One more thing though; even once you defeat a boss and overtake his turf, rival gangs will still try and reclaim that piece of land so you’ll have to fight for what’s yours in a defense race. Speaking of races, Carbon packs an entire truckload of them, except for drags (yeah, I cried too). Drift, the crowd favorite makes a return here and Canyon Drifts (similar to the downhill drifts from UG2 that have you drifting your car down that very same winding and narrowing bitch of a slope) will test your skill to the max. For some strange reason, the drift mechanics in this game feel a bit off and do take some getting used to. Besides drifts, you have Circuit Races, Sprints, Checkpoints, Speedtraps and Race Wars that are basically your circuit races with a lot more opponents thrown in. NOTE: The Race Wars feature is only available for the Xbox 360 and PC versions. Cops are back in Carbon once again, but I really preferred being chased by the boys in blue (or the Five 0 as they’re called in the game) in the open areas of Rockport and for some reason they haven’t been used to the fullest as compared to Most Wanted. As and when your heat is a particular area gets high, they’ll make their mandatory appearance ... and you guessed it, you’re back into Most Wanted territory once again with you having to evade cops using any means necessary, be it by driving through structures, petrol stations or other Pursuit Breakers introduced last year in Most Wanted. Once you’ve unloaded an environmental hazard on them, it’s time to seek out a Cooldown Zone and if the heat gets too got too handle, changing the physical appearance of your car will help reduce your wanted level.  Free roaming, something that was introduced in Underground 2 is back again and what makes matters a bit interesting is the fact that you could be challenged a racer at any given time or get busted by the cops. If free-roaming is not your thing, you’ll be glad to know that the game does offer you the option of directly jumping to your safe house where you could customize your ride, which brings me to another new feature of Carbon; Autosculpt. One thing the Underground series (both 1 and 2) were appreciated for was car customization they offered and this time EA’s taken it to the next level with Autosculpt. This nifty feature allows you detailed customization like never before; play around with the entire dimension of a particular part to suit your need by adjusting its thickness, length, width or depth. I really liked the fact that you could apply more than one layer of vinyls in UG and thankfully that’s back here as well and its sweeter than ever. Stretch it, skew it, shift it or rotate; it’s all in there. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself spending way too much time in your safe house customizing every inch of your car to suit your taste. |
