Trackmania United

Even though Trackmania’s draw lies in its multiplayer modes, United features a healthy single player element broken up into three distinct modes; Race, platform and puzzle. In the Race mode you hone your skills in different (and extremely varied) tracks that span from deserts to coastal areas to dirt tracks and the only way you can unlock the next track is by successfully completing the previous one (which means you have to score a bronze medal at least). For each track you’ll have a different vehicle that controls differently to suit the terrain at hand so the stadium tracks have you racing in an F1-ish car, while the coastal tracks have you tearing it up in a 4x4 (which unlike its bulky appearance is extremely responsive to control).

As you move up the game’s four difficulty settings,, the tracks keep getting tougher and tougher to such an extent that it’s nearly impossible to finish first; don’t worry though, there’s no rubber band AI at play here as it boils down to perfecting every nook, corner, cranny and turn. As you may know, opponents in the Trackmania series are ghosts so yeah, there’s no collision of sorts and if its intense and visceral crashes you crave, I suggest you get back to Burnout or Flatout.

In Platform mode you have to make your way from the starting line to the finish line in near vertical tracks while resetting your car as less as possible. The Puzzle mode is where your creativity can truly shine as you have to reach from the point A to point B by laying down and creating your very own track using a specific amount of building tools before the timer runs out. I personally am not a big fan of this mode and after all the fast paced action from the previous modes ,it’s kind of slow, but then again, it’s a matter of preference and if you’re the Rollercoaster Tycoon loving type, I’m sure you’ll have a ball with the track editor.
