The GoGear range of media devices from Philips has fared quite well. They manage to deliver a fairly decent set of features in a relatively easy to use set up. I can’t honestly say I’m crazy about the packaging as the PMPs tend to look quite generic with no change until the Aria was launched. The Opus is one of their newer models that happened to come by my table and here’s my experience with it. Form Factor The design hasn’t changed since the last player I reviewed which was quite a while back. The Opus has however retained the light weight slim form true to the GoGear range. This model comes with a large 2.8-inch TFT LCD which is immensely clear and easy to view. The five-way navigation system is still very evident with the Option and Return keys placed close by. One of the issues I’ve had with the GoGear PMPs is that it always seems like there’s more space for a larger screen. On the top are the volume keys and below is the key guard slider followed by the mini USB port that allows for charging and data transfer and then there’s the standard 3.5mm earphone socket. The bundled in-ear earphones are quite comfortable and provide excellent audio. On the plus side, the design is extremely simplistic and uncomplicated. Features and Performance The UI is simple and quite smooth. It does however take a little long to start up, not enough to bother you though, but it’s my job to be nit-picky in case you are. It is however well laid out and easy to navigate. Music and Other Audio The GoGear range comes with Philips’ Full Sound audio engine that enhances the tone quality to provide a much richer array of audio. If you prefer a more personalized approach to your listening you can use the EQ presets, 10 in all plus the five band graphic EQ that you can manually adjust. It also has a volume limit option that I recommend using as the Opus can throw audio at quite a high decibel level. You’ll never have to peak the volume if your recordings are of a good quality. Actually you’ll never have to go higher than three fourths of the way even if they’re not. The best part about the Opus is that it allows you to access the audio enhancing outpoints right from the Now Playing screen thanks to the quick access Options key. You can create playlists on the go and even set bookmarks so you can go back and just resume from where you left off. The radio’s reception was quite good on an average. In most locations I was able to get decently clear signals. The auto preset option did take quite a while to store all nine channels but it did find all nine in the first go. The Opus’ radio also has a recording feature. Philips has also included a microphone built into the device so you can use it as a dictaphone. The only problem is that the range is not too great. For optimal voice recording the device will have to be within 3 feet of your mouth. |
