PlayStation 3

Remember the horrified look on PlayStation fanboys when early prototypes of the Boomerang controllers were shown? Well thankfully, Sony trashed that idea and went back to the drawing board as a result of which we now have a controller that looks exactly like the PS2 controller, but its only when you hold it in the palm of your hand do you realize how light it actually is (that’s due to the fact that Sony decided to remove rumble).

At first, the controller feels a bit cheap and weird (especially if you’ve been gaming on the Xbox360), but once you play with it for a while, the weirdness kind of wears off and it starts feeling extremely comfortable and responsive. The L2 and R2 buttons have been made a bit bigger making them feel a lot like the shoulder triggers of the Xbox 360. Taking a page from the Wii’s controller design, the PS3’s controller can be moved in six directions; up, down, left, right, forward, and backward (hence the name SixAxis). As of now, this function hasn’t been implemented very well in its launch line up, except for maybe Call of Duty 3, where it can be used to melee your weapons and Project 8 where you can use it to perform stunts; hopefully developers will do a better and a more immersive job for titles like Lair and Warhawk. Either way all games will not use this function and even if they do, it can be turned on and off in a game’s options menu.

A real boon to this controller is the fact that it comes with a home button of sorts (smack in the middle of the remote denoted with a PlayStation logo), which means you can bail from your current game onto the main menu at any time). Oh and just so you know, the SixAxis controller can be re-charged from the PS3’s USB port so you won’t have to shell out thousands on pencil cell batteries (cough *Xbox 360*cough).

And if you’re the social type who just love calling people over, you’ll be glad to know the 60 GB version allows you connect up to 7 controllers wirelessly, at a time, using its inbuilt Bluetooth capabilities to a distance of nearly 65 feet (impressive huh?)
