To keep you from getting weary of the game, there are quite a few event types, namely - the Ridge State Grand Prix, Manufacturer's Trials, UFRA Single Event and Extreme Battle. Before entering any of these events, you get access to the 'Machine Connector', which is like a car customization garage where you can buy different cars and car-parts to fine tune your 'machine' for the race. However, when you just start playing RR7, you gain access to a very limited number of options. To unlock more modifications or upgrades, you have to gain reputation with different manufacturers, via the Manufacturer's Trial, or by using parts made by the particular manufacturer you wanna gain rep with. This system works like a lure to make you play that 'one extra race' before you quit playing for the day, so they've done a pretty good job in making the game painfully addictive (to an extent). As you can see, Ridge Racer 7 adds a good amount of depth and diversity to the racing genre, while retaining quite a bit of originality. Ridge Racer 7 was the first game i've played in the Ridge Racer series, and I completely loved the racing mechanics. It seems to me that Ridge Racer takes a lot from concepts that have been dumped by, or executed poorly in other racing games, and integrates them into its core in way that makes you love them. For instance, the game has the kind of car customization from the Need for Speed series, only a lot better; and the game picks up concepts like slipstreaming, which has been seen in games like Midnight Club 2 (where the system didn't play out to well), and perfects it to a great level. If you like arcade-ish racers, I suggest that you do not miss this title under any circumstances. |
