Portable scanners have created their own niche in the market, with the feasibility and ease of scanning that they provide on the go. iBall recently launched their ClickScan A3, a portable smart scanner that looks like a pretty neat contraption, but is it as useful as it looks? Let’s find out.

Design and Build Quality The ClickScan A3 is by no means portable, light weight or compact. It’s got an incredibly heavy base and frame to be labelled as any of those. Plus, it requires connectivity to a computer, a Windows PC in particular, for it to be able to work. The ClickScan comes in a black casing with a matte finish and might suit your office desk more than an outdoor field trip. The build quality is good enough with the support panels that need to remain steady while capturing a photo and the frame is pretty rigid and tough.

This portable scanner comes with a rotating head that houses a camera with a 5 mega pixel CMOS Active Pixel image Sensor and eight LED lights. It’s got a manual focus ring as well and an adjustable height for different image sizes. The USB port and LED button is located at the base of the device and it comes with a mat with different sizes on it. The ClickScan is made out of pretty durable materials, so as far as the build is concerned, you’ll be rest assured that the ClickScan isn’t going to break down any time soon.

Features The ClickScan A3 is a document scanner that captures any document up to A3 size at high resolution. Besides documents, it can be used to capture objects up to A3 sizes too. A video recording function is possible as well and you can record the progress of any operation or demo you plan to undertake under that camera. The scanner also comes with an Optical Character Recognition feature that helps you convert images containing text into characters that you can edit on your PC.
![]() A3, A4 and A5 sizes available
The scanner supports up to A3 size of images with a resolution of 2592 x 1944 pixels with a variable frame rate (depending on screen size) for video recordings. It uses the USB 2.0 interface and supports a wide variety of image formats including JPG, BMP, TIF, PDF, GIF, PNG, TGA and PCX. The ClickScan comes with a 3G1P + IR lens and works on DC 5V power supply. |

How We Test
The Tech2 Labs receive many products every single week and each of them is tested with utmost care and highest level of objectivity. There’s a constant effort to reduce and totally eliminate subjectivity. Each product is tested according to set test processes so the same test scenario is used.
The ratings awarded to a product are derived from a number of tests and calculations, keeping certain important factors in mind. These factors consist of features, performance, quality and value for money. In case of software and some other categories, build quality might be replaced with ease of use or ease of installation. Products are compared with other products in a similar price range or product category.
The features component of the score is rated based on the kind of features present on a particular product. Features are a big part of what people look for when they’re buying a new product such as a phone or a camera.
The performance score is derived from the benchmarks and tests run on the product. In case of the subjective scores, an average of the scores given by the group of reviewers is considered.
The build quality of a product is important so that it doesn’t fall apart after some use. The build quality scores from the way the product is designed and the kind of materials used in the product.
Value for money comes from the fact that a cheap product is able to provide most of the performance of a higher priced product. Once again, value for money is judged by comparing pricing and performance of products in a particular price range or category.
There are many other aspects of the product that are looked at such as the bundled software and accessories. All of these scores are aggregated together to form the final score.
What do the ratings mean?
Ratings are simple - higher the score, the better the product. A brief listing of the features and what they mean are given below.
1 - 3
The product is bad in almost every aspect. We strongly advise against purchasing this product.
4 - 6
An average product that isn't the best you can buy, but isn't the worst either.
7 - 8
Product with this rating is highly recommended because it's priced sensibly, has a good set of features and performs well.
9 - 10
Exceptionally excellent product with features and performance unlike any we've seen in the past. A must-have for everyone!
