Connectivity and Misc. Apps
The Asha 311 is a quadband GSM and 3G handset and supports 3G data speeds of up to 14.4Mbps. You also get Wi-Fi b/g/n and Bluetooth v2.1. Charging and data transfer is done via microUSB and you also get USB On-the-go support. There isn’t a dedicated GPS chip onboard so you’ll have to rely on cell towers to find your position, which isn’t very accurate as GPS. Other apps include Nokia Life, File Manager, Internet Radio and Weather. There are also some social networking apps like Facebook, Twitter, Orkut, WhatsApp, Nimbuzz and a bunch of games, which includes Angry Birds. The Ovi Store doesn’t have much of a collection either, so you’ll have to be content with the apps that come with the phone.

Camera
The 3.2MP camera lacks auto-focus, so naturally, pictures are quite blurry irrespective of the lighting condition. You get the standard fare of settings and options to tweak, including effects and frames. Video recording maxes out at VGA resolution so not much to talk about here either. We just have to wonder why Nokia even bothered with a 1GHz CPU on this phone because clearly, they haven’t put it to any use.

Battery Life
The Asha 311 packs in a chunky 1110mAh battery that dishes out a very good battery life, enough to last you up to two full days of heavy usage. We easily managed to complete one entire loop test which involved 1.5 hrs of calls, 2 hrs of video, 2 hr of audio and 2 hrs of audio streaming over Wi-Fi. Even after this, there was about 20 percent of the battery still remaining.

Verdict and Price in India
At Rs. 7,200, the Nokia Asha 311 is very expensive and not worth a buy at all. We highly recommend you add another thousand and blindly pick up the HTC Explorer. If you want a newer version of Android, more internal memory and a slightly bigger battery, then for a little more, the Sony Xpera tipo is a very good choice at around 9K. The Asha 311 has good build quality and battery life going for it, but that’s pretty much it. It doesn’t really make sense to buy it when you can have really good smartphones under 10K these days.

How We Test

The Tech2 Labs receives many products every single week and each of them is tested with the utmost care and highest level of objectivity. There’s a constant effort to reduce and totally eliminate subjectivity. Each product is tested according to set test processes so the same test scenario is used.

Verdict
The ratings awarded to a product are derived from a number of tests and calculations, keeping certain important factors in mind. These factors consist of features, performance, quality and value for money. In case of software and some other categories, build quality might be replaced with ease of use or ease of installation. Products are compared with other products in a similar price range or product category.

Features
The features component of the score is rated based on the kind of features present on a particular product. Features are a big part of what people look for when they’re buying a new product such as a phone or a camera.

Performance
The performance score is derived from the benchmarks and tests run on the product. In case of the subjective scores, an average of the scores given by the group of reviewers is considered.

Build Quality
The build quality of a product is important so that it doesn’t fall apart after some use. The build quality scores from the way the product is designed and the kind of materials used in the product.

Value
Value for money comes from the fact that a cheap product is able to provide most of the performance of a higher priced product. Once again, value for money is judged by comparing pricing and performance of products in a particular price range or category.

There are many other aspects of the product that are looked at such as the bundled software and accessories. All of these scores are aggregated together to form the final score.

What do the ratings mean?

Ratings are simple - higher the score, the better the product. A brief listing of the features and what they mean are given below.

1 - 3

The product is bad in almost every aspect. We strongly advise against purchasing this product.

4 - 6

An average product that isn't the best you can buy, but isn't the worst either.

7 - 8

Product with this rating is highly recommended because it's priced sensibly, has a good set of features and performs well.

9 - 10

Exceptionally excellent product with features and performance unlike any we've seen in the past. A must-have for everyone!

 7.0

We’ve already established that the Lumia 720 is Nokia’s best effort as far as Windows Phone 8 handsets go. This could soon change once the Lumia 925 hits markets, but as it stands now, the Lumia 720 offers the best blend of features and performance, wrapped in a beautiful package that’s quite affordable.
