Logitech Z 10

The multimedia speakers segment will always be one of the most dynamic and fast paced in the market, with some really cool and innovative designs released these days. Logitech is a veteran in this field, and we at tech2 have covered them profusely. This time we have their Z 10 speaker system, a high end, expensive speaker set, which can be used for desktops, HTPCs and even small music systems

Design and features
The Z 10 speakers are not ordinary PC speakers, in fact, judging by their form and weight they are more of active bookshelf speakers. These are quite heavy and tall. A black glossy finish adorns and makes up the front panel, while the rest of the cabinet is also black with a lusterless finish. There is a metallic silver rim on the side panels, around the edge of the facade. The right speaker houses the controls, which happen to be quite beautifully integrated. They are flush with the smooth front panel and are absolutely touch sensitive. There is a screen too, that displays info about tracks, volume setting etc. The orange color of the LED back lighting the buttons and screen is beautiful. It enhances the aesthetics as black and orange look really cool. The only con I can think of in the design is the gloss panels' weakness toward fingerprints/dirt etc. But the good thing is the package includes a nice cleaning cloth to do the needful every few days.

The power of these speakers is sufficient, at 30 watts RMS total. The speakers are 2 way, thus there are 2 drivers in each unit, a 1-inch tweeter and a 3-inch woofer. The materials of the drivers are hard to state accurately as Logitech has not mentioned them, and they are firmly sealed behind a permanent black grille. The internal design of the speakers is bi-amped, which means the woofers and tweeter are powered separately, plus there is a digital crossover.

The unit connects via USB 2.0, and is a simple plug and play design. The USB cable is included in the package, though there is also a CD ROM for installing Logitech Manager software. This is not necessary for working the Z 10, just to access extra features.
