Olympus FE-170

Features
Since, the FE-170 is aimed at the point-and-shoot audience, you can't really expect many customization options or manual controls from it. What it does offer you is a respectable amount of scene modes and guides that tweak the camera settings to take the kind of shots you want.

The guide shooting mode offers you simple options like 'Blurring background', 'Brightening subject', 'Super close-up', and many more, giving you exactly what you want.

I've always appreciated the simple and lively interface of Olympus cameras, and this one is no different. The shooting modes, give you sample pictures, giving you an idea what the mode is ideal for. The menu is simplistic with icon driven interface, and simple language ideal for a starter-level photographer.

Performance
Olympus FE-170 suffers from the same problem as a lot of starter level cameras. While they perform well in bright/ample lighting, things start going downhill once the light levels get a bit 'challenging'. The bad news is that this problem is a lot more obvious in the FE-170. More on that in a bit.

As long as you're shooting in ample lighting conditions, the FE-170 doesn't disappoint. The colors are by default vibrant to the right extent so they look lively but not over-saturated.

The images give you edge-to-edge sharpness, unlike many other digicams that tend to get blurry around the edges.

The flash provides just about adequate light, but a lot of times its not enough to meet the camera's 'heavy' light requirements.
