Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

05 Oct, 2007, 3:27 pm IST | Nikhil Singh | Console Console

For instance, in one of the game’s boss fights (all of which are absolutely fantastic and unique) you come across a heavily armored creature whose only weak points are his tongue and belly. To kill him you’ll have to stun him by shooting his tongue, then morph into the ball, roll under him and plant bombs using the attack button.

To help you spot weak points on bosses, or just know more about anything in the game’s world, you have a special scanner mode. Once in this mode you can scan all interactive objects, revealing something either helpful or interesting and informative.

This feature also allows you to tap into the backstory of the different planets you set foot on. You can read about how the races destroyed themselves, or what’s become of the remnants by scanning paintings with embedded data. This is a unique and effective way of laying out the Metroid universe’s lore to anyone.

The only complaint I have with the gameplay is that it requires you to backtrack many times. A lot of you might not mind it, but I for one hate digging through areas I’ve already explored. There’ll be many times when you’ll have to travel to and fro more than just once to either open a gate that couldn’t be blasted with your un-upgraded weapon, or simply because you missed a little niche in a wall that housed an important upgrade.

In spite of all the backtracking, the gameplay is fun and never gets repetitive. As you progress you gain upgrades for your suit and weapons, making you powerful and keeping things fresh at the same time. The game clocks at about 20-25 hours of extremely engaging and action-packed gameplay, which more than makes up for its lack of online play. If you own a Wii and love first person shooters or adventure games, this one’s certainly a must-have!
