How can a game this simple be so much fun?! Independent developers are doing an amazing job of keeping some of reminding gamers that a game doesn't always need to be insanely deep, complex or cinematic to be entertaining. It's like taking the fun factor back to the roots. Twisted Pixel has done just that with their original title — The Maw. The premise is simple. You control an alien being called Frank who encounters an unknown, blob-like living creature known as The Maw, while you are in captivity aboard a space ship. As luck would have it, the space ship crashes and Frank manages to escape with Maw, who faithfully accompanies Frank through the rest of the adventure. As you soon realize that Maw has a lot more uses than simply going on a feeding frenzy, like the ability to inherit qualities of the creatures it consumes, therein lies the key to solving most of the game's puzzles and out-witting the bad guys. But all those munchies have got to go somewhere, right? The more Maw eats, the bigger he gets. In the start of the game, he's just tall enough to reach Frank's waistline, but a few levels down and he get's really big. I'm talking about a colossal size here. This size becomes a prerequisite for getting through quite a few levels as well. Frank and Maw get shamelessly blocked by an invisible wall if the Maw isn't fat enough. |
