While stabbing dinosaurs looks as cool as f**k, it isn't a very responsive mechanic – which means you have to approach the dino from a particular angle to initiate the stabbing or you’ll be left flailing your knife in the air while multiple dinos gangbang you from different directions. And that’s something you don’t want happening since every time you get knocked down, the camera spasms violently and disorients you like mad (not in a good way) making survival against multiple foes pretty bleak. Now I've come across a lot of people who keep saying that the game looks like a PS2 game, so either they're f**ing blind or I'm playing some other game – because Turok looks as good (or bad) as any Unreal 3 engine-based FPS out there. Sure, there are texture issues that are synonymous with this engine and the game’s frame rates take a hit from time to time, but trust me, it isn’t as bad as people make it sound. While in-game characters including Turok look like they’ve steeped out from Gears of War itself, dinosaurs have been given that extra touch and look as authentic and menacing as ever. Like I mentioned in my intro, Turok’s a nice game but it’s not meaty enough (look ma, a pun) to sustain your interest for long. It’s certainly got its "whoa! awesome" moments but it does suffer from certain annoying gameplay mechanics, repetitive gameplay, and a highly erratic checkpoint system, making it tough to recommend as a purchase. Rent it or wait for it to hit the bargain bin. |
