HP LaserJet M1213nf MFP
Opting for a super simple and compact mono laser multi-function printer for your office or home? Check out the HP LaserJet M1213nf MFP. This printer is a perfect product for SMB and SOHO needs where documents are needed to be printed quickly and frequently in black and white. The printer is quite compact with a comparatively smaller footprint. It sports a smart, all-black matte finish body with an excellent rugged build quality. The MFP is very easy-to-operate and can be effortlessly configured via the control panel or the web interface if connected on the network.
The HP LaserJet M1213nf features all-in-one unit comprising of a printer, copier, scanner and fax machine which can be connected via a USB or shared with other users over the network using the Ethernet interface. The printer prints at resolutions of 600 x 600 dpi and can max out at 1200 dpi effective resolutions. The scanner features optical resolutions of 1200 dpi with 24-bit color depth. The included ADF can hold up to 35 sheets of paper for faxing or scanning. The scanner also features functions such as scan to email, application or file. The copier function can copy a maximum number of 99 copies at a time with a maximum resolution of 600 x 480 dpi for both text as well as graphics. Additionally, one can also resize copies from 30 percent up to 400 percent of the original size. And finally, the fax is a 33.6 Kb/s speed modem with resolutions capabilities of 100 dpi. The fax function can hold up to 500 A4 sized pages in its memory. It also features junk fax filter, auto fax forwarding, remote retrieval and delayed faxing.
Unpacking the printer is simple and easy, but most can be caught unawares with the amount of stoppers, protective plastics and tapes placed for packing and transport by the manufacturer. Therefore, if you are opting for this MFP, make sure you read the instruction manual much in advance before powering it up because there are a series of plastic caps and brackets that need to be removed from the printer’s toner cartridge path to ensure that no paper jams inside the printer.
The reason is that the manufacturer installs the sealed cartridge inside the printer unlike the other models where the cartridge is packed separately. Once it is unpacked, the printer can be deployed in a matter of minutes by simply installing the driver and plugging in the USB cord.
The product is a good option for those wanting to be a part of eco-friendly move as the MFP saves on power to a large extent. When in full function and standby modes, it consumes around 350 watts and 4.7 watts respectively, but when in power-save (auto-off) and power-off modes, the MFP consumes just 2 watts and 0.3 watts respectively.
The HP LaserJet M1213nf MFP is a feature-rich product and has a very simple-to-use interface. The control panel is neatly tucked in one corner of the unit and has well-spaced and tactile keys. The dot matrix dual line LCD display is large enough and displays most of the important status indications while in standby mode. The control panel is movable and can be adjusted at a convenient angle according to where it is placed on the desk. The input paper tray is front loading and can hold up to 250 sheets of paper. The printer can be configured to handle various densities of media—from standard weight paper to transparencies. The printer’s monthly duty cycle is around 8,000 pages, but the manufacturer recommends around 2,000 pages.
On the performance front, the HP LaserJet M1213nf MFP does a great job when it comes to printing and copying speeds. Regular documents can be printed at excellent speeds of 18 pages-per-minute while copying a single document can be done in less than 15 seconds flat. The printer initializes in a slightly higher period of 38 seconds from complete power off, but when in standby mode you can get the first print in just 9 seconds. Scanning took a tad longer at 66 seconds for an A4 size photo, but the scanning quality is exceptionally good. The quality of printing was not as expected when we inspected. We noted that though the quality of the text prints was excellent, the graphics were not as crisp or detailed. The gray-scale gradation test print was found to have 60 percent accuracy signifying that the gradation from pitch black to white was not very smooth and detailed. Overall, the quality of prints is good enough if you stick to text and not intensive graphics or photos.
A downside of the printer is that it does not feature automatic duplexing especially when the product is aimed towards SMB and SOHO environments. Also while printing documents, we found the printer curling the papers severely at the extreme edges creating a high possibility for paper-jams when doing manual duplexing. Though the printer features a ‘Less paper curl’ option, the printer still managed to defeat it.
The toner cartridge costs Rs 3,460 (exclusive of taxes) and can print around 1,500 pages and the print economy expected is around Rs 2.50 per print (as the print drum is included in the cartridge). The printer retails Rs 16,499 and carries a warranty period of one year. Bundled along with the printer is a power and USB cord, a driver disc and OCR software called Readiris Pro.
Verdict: The HP LaserJet M1213 nf is a worthy investment for those starting a small business or looking for a simple, compact and economical multifunction printer for their existing office. The power saving feature and small foot print is ideal for smaller sized office premises and the speedy performance is great for fast business needs.
