A Guide to MMORPGs - Part I

I’m sure that most of you out there have at least heard of, if not played MMORPGs at some point of time. For those of you who haven’t had too much experience with them, it's not too late to jump aboard the MMORPG bandwagon – we at Tech2 shall usher you through these virtual worlds by familiarizing you with the genre through three guides that shall teach you the basics and equip you for your epic journey ahead...

Let’s start off with the first step you’re going to have to take in most MMORPGs – Selecting a Class. A Class is basically a role you take up which defines the way your character plays. Since these are online games, it’s understood that the Class you take up changes the role you’re assigned to in a party/raid. A party or raid is a basically a group of players teaming up to take on a difficult quest, where each player plays a certain role to help the group accomplish their goal. To help you decide what kind of class would appeal to you, here’s a list of the possible roles you could fit into; check them out and see which role appeals to you the most, so that when you start playing your first MMORPG, you know what kind of character class you’d like to select...

Tank
Classes – Warrior, Knights, Soldiers, etc.

As the name suggests, a tank is a large, burly guy that pisses off all the bad little things that a party encounters and ensures that they focus their attention on him. His aim is to absorb as much damage from enemies as possible, ensuring that his team stays out of harm’s way. A tank’s role is vital and irreplaceable, since without him his puny party members are sure to perish.

Playing a tank gives you a feeling of empowerment since you’ll always be in the heat of action, and your actions will play an important part in your party’s success. If you like being the stalwart guy that defends others, this role will definitely suit you.
