Disappointments of 2008 - Part II

We list out all the games that let us down this year.

Each and every beat 'em up game out there, be it a Street Fighter, a Tekken or a Bloody Roar, has some sort of learning curve involved - be it in the form of a complex combo system or an intuitive, yet hard to master counter system. All Facebreaker had was two buttons to mash - upper and lower punch. The closest thing to combos, was this little bar at the bottom of the screen that you could fill up to execute special 'breaker' moves. There were dodge/parries/counters in the game, but they just boiled down to holding a button while the enemy mashed away; i.e. if a high punch was thrown at you, you just have to hold the high punch button to counter it. Facebreaker had zero depth, and relied a bit too much on timing your counters to even be remotely fun. The single player campaign was close to impossible to finish for all but highly driven and dedicated masochists, making the game a complete downer for anyone who's as much as seen anyone play a beat 'em up before. Team based strategic online shooters such as Natural Selection and Savage have always had a special place in my heart. That said, I'm also overly critical about a few aspects in their case - the gameplay should be challenging, yet accessible; they should be well balanced where units are concerned (since almost all of them have different units on each side); and most importantly, strategy should take precedence over the shooter element. While Savage 2 was an really good game, messed up on a few fundamental issues that ruined the experience for a lot of gamers. First off, an inadequate tutorial barely helped getting the player eased into this rather complex shooter. The stat system wasn't persistent, meaning you'd play many a round as a builder where you'd sacrifice being in the heat of the battle without reaping any real rewards. This would eventually mean that most of the players would play combat classes, and the strategic aspect of the game would suffer immensely. Also, the game had some really bad unit balancing issues when it released, making the human side far stronger in more ways than one. While it was a pretty decent game overall, a few issues made Savage 2 have almost no lasting appeal for most people. |
