Here's what's in store in 2009 for all you RPG fans.

Upcoming RPG Games of 2009

Borderlands

Platforms: Xbox360, PS3, PC
Release Date: TBA 2009

It seems like hybrid RPG is the flavor of the year! Borderlands is an FPS/RPG with a gritty futuristic overtone. The game takes place during a sort of 'gold rush', after a host of colonization ships head to a newly discovered planet - Pandora - with the promise of a better life and abundant raw minerals for the taking. After they discover that the only thing the planet's abundant in is alien ruins, the rich leave leaving the poor behind in a lawless dystopia. Society devolves with the only beacon of salvation being a sealed vault that's said to contain alien technology that could possibly save those on the planet. You'll be able to pick from one of three characters to play - Mordecai, Roland or Lilith - each of whom have special areas of expertise in combat which are ranged, melee and spell casting (under a cloak of futuristic technology of course). The game will feature up to four player co-op, single and multiplayer modes. It will also feature random level generation like in Diablo and vehicular combat.

Dragon Age: Origins

Platforms: Xbox360, PS3, PC
Release Date: PC - Q1 2009; Xbox360, PS3 - Q4 2009

The RPG veterans at BioWare are at it again, and after the futuristic Mass Effect they're moving back to high-fantasy with Dragon Age: Origins. While the game won't use the Dungeons and Dragon system, it's touted as the spiritual successor to the monolithic Baldur's Gate series. If that isn't enough to get you excited, check this out - the game will feature 'origin' stories, which means that depend on what type of character you start the starting storyline will be altered to follow his/her progress into the game's main plot. This means that if you start as a dwarf noble, you start off with the comfort of being part of a royal family in a big dwarven city, while if you're a poor bloke you start off from the streets in the outskirts of a small town. Your actions will have drastic effects on the world around you and depending on your actions the storyline will change. The game will feature both — the up-close and personal over-the-shoulder view as well as an isometric viewpoint, while the combat will be real-time 'pause-and-play' tactical.

Demigod

Platform: PC
Release Date: March 2009

Demigod is Gas Powered Games' brainchild and can fit under either the RTS or RPG categories. The only real way to describe this game accurately is that its a lot like the Warcraft III map called DotA (Defense of the Ancients). The game focuses on multiplayer (though it will support single player), where you'll be part of either one of two teams. You'll be able to pick from a number of heroes, each with expertise in different areas, and their own special abilities to accompany them. You'll have to work together with your allies to slay your enemies, destroy their base, and win the match.

It's quite short and it doesn't have any sort of versus multiplayer but The Darkness II is a polished and brutal shooter you should definitely check out, especially if you like ripping dudes to shreds.
