Here's what 2009 has in store for the strategy gamer...

Upcoming RTS Games of 2009

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II

Platform: PC
Release Date: 27th Febuary, 2009

Dawn of War will make a return in 2009 with Dawn of War II, that'll reintroduce you to the Space Marines, the Orks, the Eldar and the Tyranids. The single player campaign will only have you playing as the Space Marines, but the multiplayer component on the other hand will allow you access to all the factions/races so that you can bathe in the blood of your virtual enemies. I've never been a big fan of the Warhammer 40k universe since I've always disliked the idea of having high fantasy lore mixed with space age mumbo-jumbo and religions rhetoric; in spite of this, what I've seen in the gameplay/cinematic videos of the game has got me really excited about it. The game will feature a 'non-linear inter-planetary' campaign, somewhat similar to the previous game allowing you to pick your battles any way you deem fit. To add an extra layer of strategy, the game will include a cover system much like Company of Heroes, where the terrain and stances of your squads will play a major role. It will also include a supposedly extensive co-op campaign which is said to be different from the singleplayer campaign.
BattleForge

Platform: PC
Release Date: 3rd March, 2009

If you're tired of the competitive play most current RTS games encourage, you'd be glad to know that BattleForge focuses almost entirely on co-op play. If you've played the various 'scenario' maps of Warcraft III you'd know what I'm talking about - a number of players teaming up to complete a difficult objective by coordinating, building armies that support each other, and engaging in some epic large scaled battles. BattleForge picks up on that very concept of co-op gameplay, and expands it to fit the needs of variety hungry audience. The way they plan on doing this is by introducing a rather unique concept in RTS games involving cards. Each unit, each spell, each ability in BattleForge will be represented by a virtual card or set of cards that a player can buy and trade with other players. By doing so, one can customize their armies to fill their needs and their style of play, while giving them enough flexibility to make them more powerful in certain aspects of gameplay such as healing, spell damage, or physical damage, by obtaining cards of different elements.
